Police takes 25,000 IP addresses but not Seveke's killer?

31 January 2006 - Amsterdam ‹ Detectives investigating the murder of Louis Sévèke took possession of data on people who visited the political activist's website.

Family and friends of the dead man said on Tuesday the police have an estimated 25,000 unique Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. The police told the family the details are currently being preserved but not examined.

[Then why take it in the first place? They lie as usual. - HR]

The managers of the site www.louisseveke.nl wanted to keep possession of the data unless and until there were concrete grounds to give the information to the police. The investigators did not agree with this proposal and took possession of the data.

The police declined to comment about this on Tuesday.

IP addresses are conceptually similar to phone numbers, except they are used by computer networks and the internet.

A trace of an IP address can establish the internet service provider used by a visitor to a website.

From there, the authorities can try to establish the user's identity.

The issue is sensitive in this case as most of Sévèke's associates are left-wing activists who are not particularly fond of police attention.

Sévèke, 41, was shot dead on Van Welderenstraat in Nijmegen in November last year.

It's Gettin' Hot!

Eminent scholar and novelist, Gore Vidal has endorsed the World Can't Wait call for the "State of Emergency" political protests coming Feb. 3rd - 4th, focusing around demonstrations in Washington D. C. beginning on the evening of Bush's State of the Union address at joint sessions of Congress.

For several years, The Bund gegen Anpassung (Alliance against Conformity) has been waging a resolute campaign on behalf of Dr. Peter Nittmann, who while unemployed had a compulsory Church Tax withheld from his compensation payments. Such withholding was enforced by the German government over many decades, in part on the basis of the Concordat signed by the Nazis with the Vatican in 1933, still in effect today. While the government finally changed the law, effective in January, 2005, to end such withholding, they also refused to reimburse Dr. Nittmann or any of the other millions of non-church members.

Now an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights has been made, arguing that refusal to reimburse violates the European Convention on Human Rights articles on religious freedom, right to equal treatment, and right to property. The basic concept is that no one should be forced by any government to contribute to a religious organization against his express will.

#2: JUDGE TOSTI CASE, ITALY

On November 18, 2005, Judge Luigi Tosti, age 57, was sentenced to 7 months in jail and a one year suspension, for his refusal to judge in the presence of religious signs inside the courtroom. A law enacted in1926 during the fascist period states that the crucifix must be on display in Italian courtrooms. Opposing this, Judge Tosti cited the Republican Constitution of 1947, which states that all citizens "are equal before the law, without consideration of sex, race, tongue, religion." A tribunal in Aquila, about 100 kilometres from Rome, rendered the sentence.

#3: LAFIF LAHKDAR CASE, UK/TUNISIA

One of the most eloquent Secularists of Tunisia, Lafif Lahkdar, is presently living in France. In 2005, he was falsely charged by a Muslim cleric living in Britain, with writing a book critical of Muhammed. Lahkdar "vehemently denied having anything to do in any way with the infamous book. Over the last decades, Lahkdar carried his intellectual and cultural fights in the open under his name when tens of other Arab intellectuals were using pseudonyms."

With others, Lahkdar joined in an Open Letter to request the UN Security Council to establish an international tribunal for the prosecution of terrorists, "individuals, groups, or entities including but not limited to, Muslim clerics, who issue religious edicts (fatwas) inciting terrorist acts."

He has also written courageously in favor of "the modernisation and rationalisation of education in general, and religious education in particular, as a central mission of the Arab intellectual elite."

Bush will soon be signing execution warrants for American soldiers some held at Ft. Leavenworth, Ks.; a fitting response to the adulation of the “pro – life” minions that surrounded him in Manhattan, Ks. yesterday, January 23, 2006.

Senior officers say the new execution order is a major shift in policies and that:

“The new rules are acknowledged
by senior ranks as a major revision of the existing situation.
The revision also makes it possible for executions to take place at any military prison, not just Fort Leavenworth.
This, according to anti-death penalty protesters, means it would be technically legal for executions to take place at Guantanamo Bay.”

It is my strong belief that every single Democrat present in the House chamber for the speech should, at a predetermined moment, stand up and walk out. No yelling. No heated words. Every Democrat should simply stand silently and leave.


Crazy, I know. Crazy, and possibly the best idea ever put before a body of Democrats since the New Deal.


Understand this, congressional Democrats, and understand it well: you are not dealing merely with a body of political opponents in the GOP. You are dealing with a group of people that want you exterminated politically. The days of walking the halls of the Rayburn Building, sharing a bourbon with a colleague from the other side of the aisle, and hammering out a compromise are as dead as Julius Caesar. Collegiality is out. Mutual respect is out. They want you gone for good. Erased. Destroyed. …”

I arrived in Baguio, P.I. after 36 hours of continuous travel.

This place continues to amaze me no matter how often I come here.

The level of poverty, organized confusion and overpopulation is incredible. But, all in all, a very happy people suffering under a corrupt government that prevents economic development.

For example the Communist insurgents not far from my present location continue to attack cell phone towers because the company will not meet their extortion demands.

In the paper today rebel elements of the Philippine Army are talking revolt because of the corruption involved in promoting senior officers.

Who would invest $ here?

So the people suffer.

Off to HK for Chinese New Year in a few days.

Senator Brownback criticized lobbying in Washington when he was new in town. “Brownback denounced the Washington lobbying scene as ‘a domestication process where you bring in new, fresh legislators and then you start to try to tame them and assist them with gifts and meals and trips almost like you would a horse with a sugar cube.’" [Washington Post, 11/27/95] But Senator Brownback recently returned $44,500 in donations, and “tribal representatives have said Abramoff suggested donation amounts.” “Brownback is among the top dozen recipients of donations from Abramoff, his partners and the tribes he represented. On Thursday, Brownback's chief spokesman said Brownback is giving the money to American Indian charities . . ..’’Brownback met Abramoff once at a breakfast,’ said Brian Hart, Brownback's chief spokesman. The two never met formally, nor was Brownback directly involved with any tribes Abramoff represented, he said. Hart said it's not clear why Brownback got more money than most lawmakers. Of the $44,500 Brownback received, $43,000 came from four tribes. Tribal representatives have said Abramoff suggested donation amounts, but ‘Senator Brownback was never asked to do anything for or anything by Mr. Abramoff, his colleagues or his clients,’ Hart said.” [Wichita Eagle, 1/6/06]Chief of the Wyandotte Nation blasted Brownback for taking “dirty money”. “The chief of the Wyandotte Nation criticized Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) for taking "dirty money" from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Brownback has accepted $42,000 from Abramoff, The Native American Times reported. FEC said Senator Dole’s campaign committee should return $81,320 in unlawful contributions. “Federal auditors said a campaign committee for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., should return $81,320 in unlawful corporate contributions from her 2002 campaign, but the committee insists a convicted felon [Earl Allen Haywood] who cooked the books should be held responsible. . . . A federal audit of the Dole North Carolina Victory Committee, a joint fund-raising effort between Dole and the North Carolina Republican Party that Haywood helped manage, determined that it had deposited 31 checks received from the general funds of corporations. Such donations are unlawful. The review by Federal Election Commission auditors released Tuesday said the Victory Committee ‘bears the responsibility for the return of the prohibited contributions.’ The committee also could bear the consequences of violating the law. Dole's campaign committee said Haywood is responsible for those contributions and should return them himself. Neither Dole nor the party used the illegal donations because Haywood hid them, said Cleta Mitchell, the committee's Washington attorney. The auditors wrote that a lack of internal controls and oversight by the committee ‘created an environment that contributed to the misappropriation of funds and the misreporting to the commission.’" [Associated Press, 11/1/05, FEC Report]

Senator Roberts responsible for blocking progress on the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the misuse of pre-war intelligence. "I don't think there should be any doubt that we have now heard it all regarding prewar intelligence. I think that it would be a monumental waste of time to replow this ground any further." [Pat Roberts, 3/31/05]

Roberts said the investigation was on the back burner. "Roberts, Republican of Kansas, said in February that the committee's investigation of the administration's use of intelligence is 'on the back burner,' and said in April that other issues have more urgent claims on the committee's attention." [Boston Globe, 7/27/05]

Roberts promised to complete investigation into the misuse of prewar intelligence, but has failed to do so. In July 2004, Roberts promised to complete the second phase of its investigation. Roberts said that “even as I'm speaking our staff is working on phase two and we will get it done.” Asked in April 2005 when Phase Two would be completed, Roberts said, “I'm more than happy to finish this, and I want to finish it, but we have other things that we need to do.” [NBC, “Meet the Press,” 4/10/05]

Vice President Cheney and his now-indicted Chief of Staff “Scooter” Libby withheld crucial documents from the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2004 when the panel was investigating the use of pre-war intelligence that erroneously concluded Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction… Had the withheld information been turned over, according to administration and congressional sources, it likely would have shifted a portion of the blame away from the intelligence agencies to the Bush administration as to who was responsible for the erroneous information being presented to the American public, Congress, and the international community. NOVELIST ARUNDHATI ROY HAS TURNED DOWN A NATIONAL AWARD FROM INDIA'S ACADEMY OF LETTERS BECAUSE SHE OPPOSES THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICIES.


AFP/File/Rob Elliott - The jury of Sahitya Akademi last week chose her book, The Algebra of Infinite Justice, a collection of political essays, for the 2005 literary award. “I have a great deal of respect for the Sahitya Akademi, for the members of this year's Jury and for many of the writers who have received these awards in the past. But to register my protest and reaffirm my disagreement ‹ indeed my absolute disgust ‹ with these policies of the Indian Government, I must refuse to accept the 2005 Sahtiya Akademi Award”, Arundhati said in a statement here.


“These essays written between 1998 and 2001 are deeply critical of some of the major policies of the Indian State”, she said. The main area of her disgreement included the government policies of constructing big dams, pursuing nuclear weapons, increasing militarization and economic liberalization.

EVEN TODAY THIS GOVERNMENT "SHOWS A CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO THESE POLICES AND IS CLEARLY PREPARED TO IMPLEMENT THEM RUTHLESSLY AND VIOLENTLY," WHATEVER THE COST, SHE SAID.

Further she noted that in the last few months, apart from the growing number of farmers' suicide and the forcible eviction of people from their lands, the country had witnessed the police brutalisation of industrial workers in Gurgaon, killing 12 protesting against a dam in Manipur and the killing of another dozen people protesting their displacement by a steel plant in Orissa.

“Even as we call ourselves a democracy, Indian security forces control and administer Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland and the numbers of the dead and disappeared continue to mount”, she said.

The Algebra of Infinite Justice is also critical of US foreign policy, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington. “This present government, too, has seen it fit to declare itself an ally of the US, thereby condoning the American invasion of Afghanistan and the illegal occupation of Iraq, which, under the Nuremburg principles, constitutes the supreme crime of a war of aggression”, Arundhati added.
