2ND DISPATCH BEGINS.


Went from Baguio, P.I. last week taxi, bus, taxi, train (12 hours) to Hong Kong. Got here to see Lunar New Year Parade 8:30 to midnight. Having the parade at night allows them to use all kind of lighting effects not available in the sunshine.

Hundreds of fancy, exotic costumes, acrobats, lighted floats, bands , dancers etc. Still a lot of British influence in parade but based upon age of some of them it will be diminishing.


Saw spectacular fireworks display over Victoria Harbor next night. 29,000 explosives set off from 3 barges, about $450,000 blown up in 23 minutes.

Took a one day excursion to Macau, a Portuguese colony up until about 35 years ago when the Chi-Coms took it over. It is now called a Special Administrative Region as is HK. This means more liberal travel, economic and political rules apply. It was a one hour jet-boat ride from HK. Macau is now the Las Vegas for HK. I won $70 at BJ. Used to be a match making center until Bic lighters did them in.

Went to jade market and night market and bought a lot.

Tried to go into China but Americans need an advance visa which I did not have.

Next trip.

Had dinner with Doris Lang last night one of the Chopsticks Sisters who used to perform in Vegas. Bruce Lee was her childhood sweetheart.

HK is a fascinating, well-run city with a great bus and metro system, efficient and clean. There is something to be said for a former British colony which is now a semi police state.
