The spreading plague in the "Party of God."

The GOP's Spreading Plague
    By Joe Conason
    Salon.com

Friday 30 September 2005

Voters are notoriously slow in voting out politicians accused of corruption, but they may reach the tipping point with the latest revelations.

To be an honest Republican these days must be to wonder what awful revelation is coming next - and how the Grand Old Party, which once claimed to represent political reform, became a front for sleaze, corruption and cynical criminality. Across the country, from the Capitol to statehouses, Republican officials are under indictment, under investigation or under suspicion.

This week's headlines featured the indictment of Rep. Tom DeLay and the probe of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, but the infection of venality among their fellow partisans is now reaching epidemic proportions. So widespread is the plague that keeping track of all the individual cases, and their increasingly baroque variations, has become a distinct challenge.

Consider Jack Abramoff, once the prince of K Street lobbyists and a dedicated right-wing ideologue who boasted of his powerful connections to DeLay, Karl Rove, Grover Norquist and the entire Republican apparatus in Washington. Already under investigation by the Justice Department for his influence peddling among House members, including DeLay, and his swindling of Indian tribes, Abramoff was indicted last month for bank fraud in a separate South Florida case involving a casino boat company that he partly owned.

The fraud allegedly committed by Abramoff and his business partner Adam Kidan involved a phony wire transfer they used to purchase a controlling interest in SunCruz from the company's founder, Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis, in 2001.

Abramoff and Kidan later fell out with Boulis in a bitter business dispute that turned violent. In February 2001, gunmen ambushed Boulis on a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., highway and shot him repeatedly. On Tuesday, Florida authorities arrested three New York men with mob connections for the Boulis killing. Two of the men - Anthony Moscatiello and Tony Ferrari - had received payments totaling more than $240,000 from Kidan and Abramoff. Moscatiello, a longtime associate of the Gambino Mafia family, and Ferrari were supposedly providing food and consulting services to SunCruz - or so Kidan claimed when questioned by prosecutors. There is no evidence, however, that Moscatiello and Ferrari provided any services to the company.

Connecting the dots isn't difficult here: Kidan and Abramoff want to get rid of Boulis, who won't go away. Kidan and Abramoff hire Moscatiello and Ferrari with SunCruz money. Moscatiello and Ferrari allegedly whack Boulis, without any motive of their own. If the Broward County state's attorney has sufficient evidence to win convictions for a capital crime, some people will probably be talking soon in hope of avoiding the hot shot.  ….

The Unlikely Dialogue with our Lawmakers

An Unlikely Conversation With The Cowards in Congress

Suppose you were an idiot... And suppose you were a member of Congress...But I repeat myself. ~ Mark Twain

THE DIALOGUE

What shameful toads you are! Yes you, our elected lawmakers. Yes you, the folks we sent to Washington in our names. Yes you, the most spineless, cowardly and craven Congress people in history.

Yes you, the most bullied, gutless and shameful herd of legislators ever elected. And you know exactly who you are.

Where in hell is your integrity?

Where in hell is your self-respect?

You’ve been led by your submissive noses to do the bidding of liars and warmongers. You’ve been suckered into applauding some of the most egregious crimes ever committed by a US government. You’ve become such a pitiful collection of sniveling sycophants. And you know damn well who you are.

What’s that? You want to know what you’ve done? Of what odious crimes are you guilty to evoke such striking condemnation? Is that what you’re asking? Is that what you really want to know? You’re joking, right? Do you want the American people to believe have no idea what this is all about? What nonsense that is. But, for the sake of discourse, let’s accept your ignorance for the moment.

For starters, let’s take a look at two provisions in that forgotten document, the Constitution of the United States. Perhaps their significance will ring a bell somewhere in your pathetic and paralyzed minds. We can begin with Article 1, Section 8.

Here, the Constitution clearly states that you, and only you, have the right to declare war. Did you get that? Only Congress can take on the awesome responsibility of causing death and mayhem when there is a need to go to war. Only the Congress of the United States has the Constitutional power do that. Keep that in mind as we go on.

Next, let’s do a replay of an Article you knew only too well a few years ago: Article II, Section 4. It says that the President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Remember that one?

Do you remember how you fell over one another to speak at the podia of your respective Houses to condemn Bill Clinton’s private affair with Monica Lewinsky? You came out from under every piece of woodwork in the Capitol with such pompous indignation.

You came from both political parties to wail to your constituents about the sexual indiscretions of a sitting President. And then you impeached him. Yes, you were divided, but you crossed party lines to demand a trial for perjury and obstruction of justice. Keep that in mind, too. You still don’t understand, do you?

Of course, you don’t.

You still want to know what it is you’ve allegedly done. You have no clue at all. You cannot see that your guilt has nothing at all to do with anything you have done. Rather, your collective culpability lies in your INACTION, your SILENCE, your ACQUIESCENCE and your docile SURRENDER to the administration of PNAC as fronted by George W. Bush.

Your cowardice is reflected in your complicity in his crimes against this nation and the world, and your refusal to stand up and denounce the secrecy, the duplicity, and the blatant lies that have brought the United States to this terrible moment in its history.

You forfeited whatever integrity you might have had as you timidly allowed a curtain of fear and intimidation to fall over Washington and the nation. You knew that, but you probably don’t want to deal with it.

Denial is salvation for some, and you probably needed to feel self-righteous about your role in Congress and your loyalty to your voters. Some joke. In fact, you are little more than cheap imitations of true public servants. And you know without any doubt at all who you are. You still don’t have a clue as to what this is all about, do you?

That, too, is nonsense.

You do know, you really do, but feigning ignorance is clever and effective. So let’s lay it out for you in simple terms that even you can understand Maybe, when you take a close look, at the facts, you will look in the mirror with a little more skepticism. Maybe, just maybe, you will see yourselves as the lemmings you are. And maybe, just maybe, a few among you will reach back to see if your backbones have any chance of regeneration.

A SHORT LIST OF OFFENSES

  • George W. Bush came to the Presidency and immediately appointed a cadre of convicted felons and their associates from the Iran Contra era to many extremely important government positions. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Members of the Project for a New American Century, proponents of preemptive wars against Iraq and Afghanistan were immediately given more than a dozen strategic positions in the new Bush government. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • After 9/11, George Bush refused – for eighteen months - to investigate the causes of the worst attacks in history on American soil. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Condoleezza Rice lied to the nation about never having imagined the use of hijacked airliners as weapons. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Rice, Bush and Cheney had to be coerced to testify before the Kean Commission. Rice refused to testify under oath, and Bush and Cheney testified for a very limited time and only as a team. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Rice admitted to the Kean Commission that the August memo had warned about possible attacks on AMERICAN soil by Al Qaeda, and yet the President remained on vacation at his ranch for the remainder of the summer. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush manipulated intelligence information in order to gain support for his plans to attack Iraq. That is an impeachable offense. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Colin Powell lied to the United Nations in a fabricated presentation designed to gain support for a preventive attack against Iraq. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Condoleezza Rice lied over and over and over to the nation about Saddam Hussein’s WMD’s, his connection to Al Qaeda, and his plans to attack the US. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush wrested away your power to declare war by lying to the Congress about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein. He promised to use military force as a last resort, after all other options had been exhausted. He lied to Congress. That is an impeachable offence. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush handed Haliburton, Dick Cheney’s former company, multi billion dollar, no-bid contracts in Iraq. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush sent Ahmed Chalabi, a convicted felon, and his source for false WMD information to Iraq with and team of 800 armed thugs. They staged the infamous statue toppling, and bilked American taxpayers out of billions of dollars in regular payments to set up a pro Bush interim government. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • In May of 2003, George Bush declared major conflict ended in Iraq. His mission was accomplished. Since then horrific chaos, death and destruction have followed. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • The Pentagon refused to allow photographs of returning flag-draped coffins, and refused to count civilian deaths in Iraq. Yet, they managed to stage the rescue of Jessica Lynch, which was exposed as a fabrication. AND YOU NEVER SAID WORD

  • Our young men and women in Iraq were dying and being maimed because they had no armor on their Humvees to protect them from roadside bombs. They were sent to die without adequate body armor, radios, night goggles and flashlights. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians were killed by our so-called smart bombs and illegal weapons, including napalm and depleted uranium shells were used as standard weapons. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Photographs and eye-witness testimony from the ICRC and other agencies proved that the US was breaking international law by torturing prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. The problem was systemic and condoned at the highest levels of government. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Private airliners were being used by the Pentagon to transport prisoners for interrogation in other countries that condone and practice horrific methods of torture. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • George Bush and his cohorts changed the rationale for going to war over and over, manipulating their mantras as each lie was exposed and new reasons were needed to justify their illegal war. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • There was no plan to keep the peace, no plan to stop the looting, no plan to deal with an insurgency despite the warnings of so many in the military. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • The chaos, increased, the deaths and the destruction grew, and the insurgency proved to be unending. But your President told you we were making progress. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • The Downing Street Minutes were leaked to the public months ago. The content of these nine documents made it clear that George Bush had planned an invasion of Iraq at all costs, and that he planned to ‘fix’ intelligence information to gain support for his war of choice. That is an unquestionable high crime that merits impeachment. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • The Downing Street Minutes remain ignored by the White House, and neither the Congress nor the media have demanded answers from the President. Rep. John Conyers was refused a meeting room for an airing of these important documents and had to hold his hearing in a tiny basement room. Such disrespect was unprecedented and inexcusable. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

This, dear Congress people, is the short list. But even in its brevity, it is a powerful indictment of your villainous roles in tacit support of the affairs d’etat of the Bush administration. But, to really get to you, to really make you sit up and look at yourselves with some pangs of conscience, the list needs a powerful finale, - one that makes all the other items almost pale by comparison.

So here it is:

  • In March of 2003, someone in the White House committed a serious felony. He or she or they leaked the identity of a CIA operative to the press. This was done to punish Joseph Wilson, a man who had dared to expose George Bush’s lie about yellow cake uranium sales to Saddam Hussein. Despite the seriousness of this crime, George Bush did nothing to try and discover who was responsible. In fact, he refused to conduct any investigation of his own staff to uncover a felony under his roof. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • After three months of ignoring a crime by someone in the WH, the CIA demanded an inquiry of what they termed a crime. Only then was the case given to WH buddy and supporter, then AG John Ashcroft. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Finally, after five months had passed, the case was handed to a Special Counsel working on behalf of the Justice Department. Two years and millions of dollars after the Novak article outing Valerie Plame appeared, George Bush has yet to call Karl Rove aside and demand an explanation. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • Two years and millions of dollars after the article appeared, George Bush has yet to come forward and tell us what he knew and when he knew it. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

  • YOU STILL REFUSE TO UTTER A SINGLE WORD!ENDING THE CONVERSATION So there it is, folks.

There is your non-response, your silence, your inertia in the face of the actions that have brought this country to its most divisive state since the Vietnam conflict. There is a short list of your kow-towing to an administration that has made our country hated all over the globe, and turned our leaders into international targets of ridicule and disgust.

There it is, folks, and if the shoe fits, you know what to do. Your silence has been both appalling and immoral. You are as responsible for the death and destruction in Iraq as the Bush/PNAC warmongers, and your legacy will mark you as the lackeys and bootlickers you are. But everything changed with 9/11, you claim.

We wouldn’t dare question the President, you say. We would surely have been called traitors, or appeasers, or even worse….liberals.

We had to go along with him, you insist. And in a way, you’re right.

9/11 did change things. It separated the cowards from those with principle and conviction. The latter, sadly, were far outnumbered in Congress by the former. But that is how history is always made. The few who dare, take the risks. And those few earn a lasting and much admired place in history.

Not so, you. Yes, for certain, you know who you are. But more important, so do the American people. They have watched you cower and crawl and promote the crimes of your President and his handlers.

Despite the silence of the media and their complicity along with yours, the truth is gradually seeping into the consciousness of the public. If there is any justice in the world, you will answer to them for your cowardice. Public opinion polls must be making you nervous right now.

You men and women, who represent us in the hallowed halls of Congress, have lost the confidence of more than 63 percent of the voters!

In truth, you have not lost it; you have systematically and cravenly destroyed it. You made choices, and hopefully, you will have to answer for them.

You saw what was happening, you learned the truth, you were witness to the crimes and the treason, and you sat back and did nothing.

You saw the evil grow and spread. AND YOU NEVER SAID A WORD.

Next November, the voting public will have its turn (that is if we solve the election fraud situation that has dominated elections since the 2000 coup d’etat.)

They will either thank you for your honorable work, or will remove you from office for your betrayal of their trust. Start worrying now, because your time is short.

On Election Day, 2006, the full House and one third of the Senate are up for election. On that day Americans will have a chance to have the very last word. If there is any justice, that word to you will be goodbye.

How many members of the Bush administration does it take to change a light bulb?

1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed.

2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed.

3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb.

4. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb or for darkness.

5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb.

6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: LIGHT BULB CHANGE ACCOMPLISHED.

7. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how Bush was literally in the dark.

8. One to viciously smear #7.

9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along.

10. And finally, one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country. That is a total of 10 people, and no evidence that the light bulb has actually been changed (assuming the photo op was staged and no actual work was accomplished). Did Halliburton fail to perform their duties with regard to the light bulb?

Many Thanks to Mr. Tennant for laying this all out to my many readers.

My "Republican" relatives ...

I was raised in a small town called LeRoy, Kansas during the sixties and couldn’t wait to get away from it into the big bad world of demonstration politics, draft dodging and cultural revolution.

I stole Karl Marx and a multi – volume account of Trotsky’s life from the high school library because it hadn’t been checked out, according to the slip card, since 1963 – nobody was reading these books in LeRoy, Ks.

My parents were Republican, both voting for Nixon each time he ran for the presidency. I hated what they were doing at the time supporting anything Nixon said or did. I refused one Thanksgiving Day to say the meal prayer and was slapped out of my chair for it. Every evening the grainy black and white television screen would broadcast Walter Cronkite with a board tallying war deaths like football scores, it made me sick, angry and convinced nobody understood me in LeRoy, Ks.

Since that horrible time I have “mellowed” and grown to appreciate in a deep way some of the things my father taught me about the Republican outlook of the “I like Ike” era. He many years later after over a decade of not communicating with him apologized for the holiday slapping – and said he too had grown to resent the perpetual wars of this “empire.”

You wrote in your most recent and excellent post at Counterpunch:

“Conservatives and Republicans used to be people who thought it was America's business to avoid wars and to govern well at home. It was Democrats who involved us in wars--World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam all started under Democratic presidents.

Governing well at home meant being suspicious of government power, not giving government carte blanche with Orwellian legislation called ‘the Patriot Act.’ I can remember when conservatives and Republicans would have gone berserk if Democrats had identified patriotism with the police state legislation called ‘the Patriot Act.’” - WHY IS CHENEY LOBBYING FOR A BOOST IN CHINA’S NUCLEAR CAPABILITY?

Mr. Roberts, I have read almost every essay you have posted on Counterpunch over the last several months and have come to understand that my own extended family members have become delusional, disjointed and drunk with this “new” form of fascistic “Republican.”

Now I understand and have softened much of my emotional distrust of Nixon. He did get us out of Vietnam and he started the E.P.A. and ensured a minimum wage for hundreds of millions of low – wage people. I still think he was a bit of a rat about dirty political tricks, but nothing compared to this regime.

I was taught that sectarian religion had no place in the government; instead government was to protect all religions from each other. I was taught that privacy in the home and the bedroom were matters of those that live in the home and sleep in those bedrooms. I was taught that the First Amendment insured this freedom. I was taught that so long as the dissent was peaceable – it was not only permissible but necessary to guarantee a check on unbridled totalitarianism. I have learned those lessons in blood and sweat since growing older, and I have come to the conclusion that my beloved relatives in my extended family are no longer capable of practicing or understanding their own “lessons.”

I love them more now than before, but cannot understand how they have allowed this rabid evangelical Christian, imperialist monster of the Republican Party to betray them.

They no longer believe in the privacy of the free individual in a republican government.

I married over twenty years ago a woman physician, who decided in the early nineties to start performing abortions, one of less than a half dozen in this state to do so, and both of us were quickly thrown into the sordid and dirty politics of the “new Republicans” in this state. I was forced, contrary to my own pacifistic leanings, to legally arm myself and to develop an intelligence network (at great personal expense) to determine threat assessments against my family. The people surrounding the clinics I soon found myself protecting, for the most part were mainly religiously hysterical people who were more mentally ill than homicidal, yet no one in this position could negate the nefarious and lethal activities of many of their cohorts around the country.

And not one of my relatives even fathomed, understood or counseled me in this debacle. Support was furtive at best. My step – father was the only one who repeatedly said he supported my wife’s decision to perform abortions – the rest were silent.

The only counsel I received was from an uncle who confidently assured me that Bush Two was not going to outlaw abortion during the Gore – Bush election and that the best thing I could do was vote for the moron. I registered as an Independent and will never take on registration in any political party for the rest of my life on the surface of this planet.

My only conclusion to this is that they equate criticism of a Republican politician to treasonous activity and have thrown their most important lessons as Ike taught them of the “military industrial complex” to the BBQ pit in their backyards.

They have let this moronic monster of a political machine to fester and grow and my only hope is that they listen and read of more authors like you, criticize the hell out of their local party leaders and get the profiteers and zealots out now! At least, you remind them of what they used to stand for.

Sincerely,

Michael Caddell

Ps. To all my beloved relatives receiving this transmit. I apologize if I have offended you but it had to be said by someone in our family. My immediate family has been battered, dislocated and practically destroyed by your political hypocrisies. You didn’t like communist regimes in the fifties and sixties now you support and profit from Wal – Mart destroying our village small businesses, importing their Chinese junk upon us, selling nukes to them and hold our whole country hostage to Big Energy, Big Oil and Big Agriculture. Get mad, get mad as hell, but don’t blame me anymore for this mess.

Just like Iraq it’s your mess, now clean it up – and get the morons running your party OUT!

Mr. Roberts articles are at: http://www.counterpunch.org/roberts08112005.html they are archived also elsewhere at this web site, look for them on your own, I am not going to spoon feed them to you. You wouldn’t respect my hand holding anyhow.

MILITARY FAMILIES TO JOIN CINDY SHEEHAN IN CRAWFORD

Gold Star and Military Families from Across Country on their way to Texas

CRAWFORD, TX – More members of Gold Star Families for Peace (GSFP) and Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) are traveling to Texas to join the protest outside of President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he is vacationing for the month of August.

Starting today, Gold Star families from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arkansas and other states whose loved ones have died as a result of the war in Iraq will be joining one of their members, Cindy Sheehan, at the protest. Ms. Sheehan, whose son Army Specialist Casey Sheehan was killed in Sadr City, Iraq on April 4, 2004, has been in Crawford since August 5th, demanding a meeting with the President. These families will be joined by military families with loved ones currently serving in Iraq or about to deploy or redeploy to Iraq. All of these families are coming to Crawford, Texas to share their stories about the personal costs of the war in Iraq and add their voices to the call for a meeting with President Bush.

On August 3, 2005 President Bush, speaking about the dreadful loss of life in Iraq in early August, said "We have to honor the sacrifices of the fallen by completing the mission… The families of the fallen can be assured that they died for a noble cause." Gold Star and military families coming to Crawford know that the cause was not noble; that their loved ones died, or are currently in harm’s way, serving in a war based on lies.

In the first 8 days of August, 36 service members died in Iraq; countless Iraq children, women and men are dying each day. All of the families traveling to Crawford will carry the message to the vacationing President: Honor our fallen and honor our loved ones’ service by ending the occupation, bringing the troops home now and taking care of them when they get here.

President Bush has consistently tried to hide, and to hide from, the cost of the war in Iraq. This August, these costs are being brought right to his doorstep.

Members of Gold Star Families for Peace and Military Families Speak Out who are traveling to Crawford will be available for interview beginning on Tuesday afternoon August 9th.

Read: “My Life Living With Depleted Uranium” by Dawn Campbell. It is heart-breaking, but at the same time, her story is not a singular story. Those being sent to Iraq are going to be repeating Dawn's story as they are being contaminated in wholesale numbers. Then there is what DU has done to those in Iraq since 1991. This country is being run by war criminals--those whom I lump together under the heading of Bush/Cheney & Co., Inc. GOLD STAR MOTHER TO STAY, BUSH DITCHES HER, SUPPORTERS BEGIN HUNGER STRIKE

FOUR MEMBERS OF GROUP AT CAMPSITE HAVE STARTED A HUNGER STRIKE IN SOLIDARITY WITH MOTHER.

President Bush Ditches Mother Of Slain Soldier

By Nathan Diebenow
Associate Editor, The Lone Star Iconoclast – on – line

CRAWFORD — The mother of a U.S. soldier slain in Iraq was denied a face-to-face meeting with President Bush here Saturday after she walked through a ditch-like path in the August heat to the President’s Prairie Chapel Ranch.
“I didn’t come all this way from California to stand here in a ditch,” said Cindy Sheehan, 48, co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, attempting to continue her trek to the ranch.
Even though two of the President’s aides later agreed to deliver her message to him, Sheehan said that she would remain in Crawford for the whole month, if need be, until she is granted a private audience with the commander-in-chief to ask him for what “noble cause” did her son die overseas.
“If he doesn’t come out to talk to me in Crawford, I’ll follow him to D.C., and I’ll camp out on his lawn,” she said, to a round of applause from her supporters. “I’ll go to prison. I don’t want to live in a country where people are treated this way.” …….

Gold Star Mother is staying in Crawford, TX to see President Bush

SWELTERING TEXAS HEAT SMALL GROUP
WALK TO BUSH RANCH, STOPPED
CRAWFORD, TX - After attending a small program commemorating the 60th anniversary of the WWII atomic bombing in Japan at the Crawford Peace House a group of Iraq War veterans and relatives of soldiers killed began a journey to President Bush's ranch in the sweltering summer heat. The procession was ordered to stop several miles from the ranch after several members walked upon the highway apparently violating an agreement reached with law enforcement officers.

Members of the group claim that support convoys from San Diego and Louisiana were traveling to join them in waiting for a prominent member of the group, Cindy Sheehan, to meet with Bush "face - to - face." A short meeting did take place later in the day with representatives of the Bush White House.

MOTHER VOWS TO CONTINUE WAITING TO HEAR FROM BUSH WHILE HE IS VACATIONING AT HIS HOME.

Cindy Sheehan, co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace and mother of U.S. soldier who was slain in Iraq, called for President Bush on Saturday, Aug. 6, to return all troops in Iraq to the United States immediately. Although she failed to meet with Bush face-to-face at his Crawford-area ranch, Sheehan did speak with two of the president's aides. She still vowed to remain in Crawford to meet with the President.

Kansas Senator Packs in the Political Pork for Kansans

SOME CRITICS CLAIM "MUCHO BIG HUSH MONEY"

(NEWS CENTRAL BLUE BARN, JEFFERSON COUNTY, KS) The estimated $40 million housing construction boom exploding at Ft. Riley and nearby Junction City, Kansas is directly linked to the efforts of our Kansas Senator Pat Roberts. The frenzied construction will be for housing of the estimated 9,000 additional military service members and family dependents that are relocating here over the next three years. U. S. army personnel at the 152-year-old military base (“Army Post”) accounted for around $874 million dollars last year and the economic impact of an additional possible 30,000 people into the area is a veritable economic flood of money for the area.

According to Robert’s Washington DC office the funds for the building construction is but a part of even larger package to come to Kansas.
“The $25 million will be in addition to the $47 million in guaranteed assistance Kansas will already receive from USDA’s Rural Development Agency. The additional $25 million will be dedicated solely to housing the military and civilian employees and their families who will be coming to Fort Riley. That totals a record $72 million for rural housing projects in Kansas. “ To read more go to: http://tinyurl.com/7pnv6

So what does this all have to do with our Sen. Roberts?

AND why do we owe him a big “Thank You” for pumping all this military political pork our way?

Well first he is a native son of Kansas, so we’re glad he still comes home every now and then, unlike our old friend Sen. Bob Dole.

According to his biographical notes: “Born in Topeka April 20, 1936, Senator Roberts is the son of the late Wes Roberts, Chairman of the Republican National Committee under President Dwight Eisenhower. His great-grandfather, J.W. Roberts, founded the Oskaloosa Independent, the state's second oldest newspaper.” The Oskaloosa Independent is one of the big south county news weeklies I read regularly here in North Jefferson County. This guy can’t be that bad, or so oily to be that bad, can he?

Senator Pat is also the chairman of the very powerful Senate Select Intelligence Committee, privy to the nation’s most important secrets and “oversight” for the most powerful intelligence groups in the world. There has been quite a bit of stink going on about just what “oversight” his committee is engaged in, some say scandalous whitewash and stonewalling in relation to the Bush adminstration’s now well documented series of lies used to dupe most of the people in America to the War in Iraq. Sen. Roberts has had some heat for his work, or lack thereof, just after the three point Bush re - election victory. See the scoop we published not too long ago at: http://tinyurl.com/dp868 and bear in mind that while Roberts may have powder puffed the blood-soaked lies of the Bush regime as “flawed” (an understatement of criminal magnitude) that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take the money and run in Kansas.

Read what fell into Sen. Pat Roberts Washington DC mailbox last week:

“Nothing could be more important for the American people than to have an accurate picture of the events that led to the decision to bring the United States into war in Iraq. The Senate Intelligence Committee has an obligation to present to the American people the factual basis of that process.” - from last weekend’s letter by former Ambassador Joseph Wilson to Sen. Pat Roberts (R – KS), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

I’m getting all lathered up and ready to grease down in nervous anticipation of getting in on some of the slop at the trough. Oink! Oink!

An important new book "Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Bombings"

DYING TO WIN – Hard core conservatives should consider reading their own best critics.

I’m not going to give away names because I want my Republican relatives who get this to look for themselves.

Since all my relatives are Republicans and all my friends are either Democrats or Independents I have been getting pretty adept at walking the line.

From the conservatives’ presses, an interview with an academic studying “suicide – terrorists” and a book recently released that debunks many of the arguments put forth by the “war on the brain” Bushites.

Bear in mind this interview appears in the “American Conservative” magazine, hardly a place to read this kind of stuff – which makes me agree with others that the war strategy is neither Republican nor Democrat; it is just naked imperialism for the Big Oil crowd to support Zionism in Israel (Palestine).

According to what I read and heard during this interview it will upset a number of the Bush administration apple carts concerning the Iraq War and the propaganda that so many in the heartland buy into, that being, the common [shallow] argument, “fight them there, before we have to fight them over here” all are addressed in the interview located at: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/071405O.shtml (Hard shell Republicans who can’t stomach reading liberal web sites can go to the original interview link located in the header to read the original “American Conservative” article.)

And for those still addicted to the television the same academic also appeared on C – Span’s Washington Journal, last Sunday morning. The switchboard was jammed, questions piped in from recently bombed London, California and the Fiji Islands and “there is no end to the killings in sight.”

Amb. Joe Wilson responds to widespread attacks on his veracity in the press.

The Honorable:
Pat Roberts
J. Rockefeller

Dear Senator Roberts and Senator Rockefeller,

I read with great surprise and consternation the Niger portion of Senators Roberts, Bond and Hatch "additional comments" to the Senate Select Intelligence Committee's Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community's Prewar Assessment on Iraq. I am taking this opportunity to clarify some of the issues raised in these comments.

First conclusion: "The plan to send the former ambassador to Niger was suggested by the former ambassador's wife, a CIA employee."

That is not true. The conclusion is apparently based on one anodyne quote from a memo Valerie Plame, my wife sent to her superiors that says "my husband has good relations with the PM (prime minister) and the former Minister of Mines, (not to mention lots of French contacts) both of whom could possibly shed light on this sort of activity." There is no suggestion or recommendation in that statement that I be sent on the trip. Indeed it is little more than a recitation of my contacts and bona fides. The conclusion is reinforced by comments in the body of the report that a CPD reports officer stated the "the former ambassador's wife offered up his name'" (page 39) and a State Department Intelligence and Research officer that the "meeting was apparently convened by [the former ambassador's wife] who had the idea to dispatch him to use his contacts to sort out the Iraq-Niger uranium issue."

In fact, Valerie was not in the meeting at which the subject of my trip was raised. Neither was the CPD Reports officer. After having escorted me into the room, she departed the meeting to avoid even the appearance of conflict of interest. It was at that meeting where the question of my traveling to Niger was broached with me for the first time and came only after a thorough discussion of what the participants did and did not know about the subject. My bona fides justifying the invitation to the meeting were the trip I had previously taken to Niger to look at other uranium related questions as well as 20 years living and working in Africa, and personal contacts throughout the Niger government. Neither the CPD reports officer nor the State analyst were in the chain of command to know who, or how, the decision was made. The interpretations attributed to them are not the full story.

In fact, it is my understanding that the Reports Officer has a different conclusion about Valerie's role than the one offered in the "additional comments". I urge the committee to reinterview the officer and publicly publish his statement.

It is unfortunate that the report failed to include the CIA's position on this matter. If the staff had done so it would undoubtedly have been given the same evidence as provided to Newsday reporters Tim Phelps and Knut Royce in July, 2003. They reported on July 22 that:

"A senior intelligence officer confirmed that Plame was a Directorate of Operations undercover officer who worked 'alongside' the operations officers who asked her husband to travel to Niger.

"But he said she did not recommend her husband to undertake the Niger assignment. 'They (the officers who did ask Wilson to check the uranium story) were aware of who she was married to, which is not surprising,'" he said. 'There are people elsewhere in government who are trying to make her look like she was the one who was cooking this up, for some reason,' he said. 'I can't figure out what it could be.' "We paid his (Wilson's) airfare. But to go to Niger is not exactly a benefit. Most people you'd have to pay big bucks to go there,' the senior intelligence official said. Wilson said he was reimbursed only for expenses." (Newsday article Columnist blows CIA Agent's cover, dated July 22, 2003).

In fact, on July 13 of this year, David Ensor, the CNN correspondent, did call the CIA for a statement of its position and reported that a senior CIA official confirmed my account that Valerie did not propose me for the trip:

"'She did not propose me," he [Wilson] said--others at the CIA did so. A senior CIA official said that is his understanding too."

Second conclusion: "Rather that speaking publicly about his actual experiences during his inquiry of the Niger issue, the former ambassador seems to have included information he learned from press accounts and from his beliefs about how the Intelligence Community would have or should have handled the information he provided."This conclusion states that I told the committee staff that I "may have become confused about my own recollection after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the names and dates on the documents were not correct." At the time that I was asked that question, I was not afforded the opportunity to review the articles to which the staff was referring. I have now done so.

On March 7, 2003 the Director General of the IAEA reported to the United Nations Security Council that the documents that had been given to him were "not authentic". His deputy, Jacques Baute, was even more direct, pointing out that the forgeries were so obvious that a quick Google search would have exposed their flaws. A State Department spokesman was quoted the next day as saying about the forgeries "We fell for it." From that time on the details surrounding the documents became public knowledge and were widely reported.

I was not the source of information regarding the forensic analysis of the documents in question; the IAEA was.The first time I spoke publicly about the Niger issue was in response to the State Department's disclaimer. On CNN a few days later, in response to a question, I replied that I believed the US government knew more about the issue than the State Department spokesman had let on and that he had misspoken. I did not speak of my trip.

My first public statement was in my article of July 6 published in the New York Times, written only after it became apparent that the administration was not going to deal with the Niger question unless it was forced to. I wrote the article because I believed then, and I believe now, that it was important to correct the record on the statement in the President's State of the Union address which lent credence to the charge that Iraq was actively reconstituting its nuclear weapons program. I believed that the record should reflect the facts as the US government had known them for over a year.

The contents of my article do not appear in the body of the report and is not quoted in the "additional comments." In that article, I state clearly that "As for the actual memorandum, I never saw it. But news accounts have pointed out that the documents had glaring errors -- they were signed, for example, by officials who were no longer in government -- and were probably forged. (And then there's the fact that Niger formally denied the charges.)"

The first time I actually saw what were represented as the documents was when Andrea Mitchell, the NBC correspondent, handed them to me in an interview on July 21. I was not wearing my glasses and could not read them. I have to this day not read them. I would have absolutely no reason to claim to have done so. My mission was to look into whether such a transaction took place or could take place. It had not and could not. By definition that makes the documents bogus.

The text of the "additional comments" also assert that "during Mr. Wilson's media blitz, he appeared on more than thirty television shows including entertainment venues. Time and again, Joe Wilson told anyone who would listen that the President had lied to the American people, that the Vice President had lied, and that he had 'debunked' the claim that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa." My article in the New York Times makes clear that I attributed to myself "a small role in the effort to verify information about Africa's suspected link to Iraq's nonconventional weapons programs."

After it became public that there were then Ambassador to Niger, Barbro Owens-Kirkpatrick's report and the report from a four star Marine Corps General, Carleton Fulford, in the files of the U. S. government, I went to great lengths to point out that mine was but one of three reports on the subject. I never claimed to have "debunked" the allegation that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa. I claimed only that the transaction described in the documents that turned out to be forgeries could not have and did not occur.

I did not speak out on the subject until several months after it became evident that what underpinned the assertion in the State of the Union address were those documents, reports of which had sparked Vice President Cheney's original question that led to my trip. The White House must have agreed. The day after my article appeared in the Times a spokesman for the President told the Washington Post that "the sixteen words did not rise to the level of inclusion in the State of the Union."

I have been very careful to say that while I believe that the use of the sixteen words in the State of the Union address was a deliberate attempt to deceive the Congress of the United States, I do not know what role the President may have had other than he has accepted responsibility for the words he spoke. I have also said on many occasions that I believe the President has proven to be far more protective of his senior staff than they have been to him. The "additional comments" also assert: "The Committee found that, for most analysts the former ambassador's report lent more credibility, not less, to the reported Niger-Iraq uranium deal."

In fact, the body of the Senate report suggests the exact opposite: --

In August, 2002, a CIA NESA report on Iraq's weapons of Mass Destruction capabilities did not include the alleged Iraq-Niger uranium information (pg. 48) --

In September, 2002, during coordination of a speech with an NSC staff member, the CIA analyst suggested the reference to Iraqi attempts to acquire uranium from Africa be removed. The CIA analyst said the NSC staff member said that would leave the British "flapping in the wind." (pg. 50)--

The uranium text was included in the body of the NIE but not in the key judgments. When someone suggested that the uranium information be included as another sign of reconstitution, the INR Iraq nuclear analyst spoke up and said the he did not agree with the uranium reporting and that INR would be including text indicating their disagreement in their footnote on nuclear reconstitution. The NIO said he did not recall anyone really supporting including the uranium issue as part of the judgment that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear program, so he suggested that the uranium information did not need to be part of the key judgments. He told Committee staff he suggested that "We'll leave it in the paper for completeness. Nobody can say we didn't connect the dots. But we don't have to put that dot in the key judgments." (pg. 53)

-- On October 2, 2002, the Deputy DCI testified before the SSCI. Senator Jon Kyl asked the Deputy DCI whether he had read the British White Paper and whether he disagreed with anything in the report. The Deputy DCI testified that "the one thing where I think they stretched a little bit beyond where we would stretch is on the points about where Iraq seeking uranium from various African locations." (pg.54)

-- On October 4, 2002 the NIO for Strategic and Nuclear Programs testified that "there is some information on attempts....there's a question about those attempts because of the control of the material in those countries....For us it's more the concern that they (Iraq)[have] uranium in country now." (pg. 54)

-- On October 5, 2002, the ADDI said an Iraq nuclear analyst -- he could not remember who -- raised concerns about the sourcing and some of the facts of the Niger reporting, specifically that the control of the mines in Niger would have made it very difficult to get yellowcake to Iraq. (pg. 55)

-- Based on the analyst's comments, the ADDI faxed a memo to the Deputy National Security Advisor that said, "remove the sentence because the amount is in dispute and it is debatable whether it can be acquired from this source. We told Congress that the Brits have exaggerated this issue. Finally, the Iraqis already have 550 metric tons of uranium oxide in their inventory." (pg. 56)

-- On October 6, 2002, the DCI called the Deputy National Security Advisor directly to outline the CIA's concerns. The DCI testified to the SSCI on July 16, 2003, that he told the Deputy National Security Advisor that the "President should not be a fact witness on this issue," because his analysts had told him the "reporting was weak." (pg. 56)

-- On October 6, 2002, the CIA sent a second fax to the White House which said, "more on why we recommend removing the sentence about procuring uranium oxide from Africa: Three points 1) the evidence is weak. One of the two mines cited by the source as the location of the uranium oxide is flooded. The other mine cited by the source is under the control of the French authorities. 2) the procurement is not particularly significant to Iraq's nuclear ambitions because the Iraqis already have a large stock of uranium oxide in their inventory. And 3) we have shared points one and two with Congress, telling them that the Africa story is overblown and telling them this in one of the two issues where we differed with the British.

-- On March 8, 2003, the intelligence report on my trip was disseminated within the U.S. Government according the Senate report (pg. 43). Further, the Senate report states that "in early March, the Vice President asked his morning briefer for an update on the Niger uranium issue." That update from the CIA "also noted that the CIA would be debriefing a source who may have information related to the alleged sale on March 5."

The report then states the "DO officials also said they alerted WINPAC analysts when the report was being disseminated because they knew the high priority of the issue." The report notes that the CIA briefer did not brief the Vice President on the report and the Vice President let the matter drop. It is clear from the body of the Senate report that the Intelligence Community, including the DCI himself, made several attempts to ensure that the President not become a "fact witness" on an allegation that was so weak.

A thorough reading of the report substantiates the claim made in my opinion piece in the New York Times and in subsequent interviews I have given on the subject. The sixteen words should never have been in the State of the Union address as the White House now acknowledges. I undertook this mission at the request of my government in response to a legitimate concern that Saddam Hussein was attempting to reconstitute his nuclear weapons program. This was a national security issue that has concerned me since I was the Deputy Chief of Mission in the U.S. Embassy in Iraq before and during the first Gulf War. At the time of my trip I was in private business and had not offered my views publicly on the policy we should adopt towards Iraq.

Indeed, throughout the debate in the runup to the war, I took the position that the U.S. be firm with Saddam Hussein on the question of weapons of mass destruction programs including backing tough diplomacy with the credible threat of force. In that debate I never mentioned my trip to Niger. I did not share the details of my trip until May, 2003, after the war was over, and then only when it became clear that the administration was not going to address the issue of the State of the Union statement. It is essential that the errors and distortions in the additional comments be corrected for the public record.

Nothing could be more important for the American people than to have an accurate picture of the events that led to the decision to bring the United States into war in Iraq. The Senate Intelligence Committee has an obligation to present to the American people the factual basis of that process. I hope that this letter is helpful in that effort. I look forward to your further "additional comments."

Sincerely,

MORE 'STRANGE FRUIT' AS NEW FBI WHISTLEBLOWER CLAIMS BUREAU IS UNPREPARED FOR DOMESTIC TERRORISTS

What is falling through the historical cracks in our post 9/11 country?

Mike German, a former FBI agent who worked covert operations infiltrating far – right organizations that engaged in domestic terrorism has been recently disclosing certain aspects of his work that should alarm anyone not affiliated with the far – right Republican party.

Citizens complain about the erosion of civil rights, and rightfully so, but during the late eighties and throughout the nineties – FBI agents working in the field have complained of having their investigations curtailed of domestic terror groups by branch office heads and above; all the way to Washington headquarters and the Department of Justice.

Examine the news program recently broadcast at: http://tinyurl.com/7nwt9 where an FBI agent has turned to whistleblowing concerning his undercover work on domestic counter – terrorism and the FBI’s “dysfunctionality.”

The former agent believes that the “Lone Wolf” is not the most dangerous part of the scope of field investigations in his recent Washington Post piece at: http://tinyurl.com/8sr9c ; and recounts his difficulty in doing background organizational research citing Paul Hill, Michael Griffin, Eric Rudolph and others involved in the right – wing domestic terrorist organizations.

From Mike German’s Washington Post important commentary piece:

But every once in a while, a follower of these movements bursts violently into our world, with deadly consequences -- McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Buford Furrow Jr., Paul Hill, to name just a few. And all these convicted murderers were identified as "lone extremists," the most difficult terrorists to stop because they act independently from any organization.
Or do they?

Tim McVeigh seemed able to find a militia meeting wherever he went. He was linked to militia groups in Arizona and Michigan, white supremacist groups in Oklahoma and Missouri, and at gun shows he sold copies of "The Turner Diaries," a racist novel written by the founder of a neo-Nazi organization. No one finds such groups by accident. Eric Rudolph, who planted bombs at the Atlanta Olympics, two abortion clinics and a gay nightclub, grew up in the Christian Identity movement, which identifies whites as God's chosen people and encourages the faithful to follow the biblical example of Phineas by becoming instruments of God's vengeance. Aryan Nations, formerly of Hayden Lake, Idaho, was a center of Christian Identity thought; not incidentally, Buford Furrow worked there as a security guard before going on a shooting rampage at a Jewish day-care center in Southern California. Paul Hill wrote of the need to take "Phineas actions" to prevent abortions and was so well known that the news media used him to speak in support of Michael Griffin's killing of abortion doctor David Gunn. That Hill later shot an abortion provider himself should have surprised no one.

The fact that these individuals, after being exposed to extremist ideology, each committed violent acts might lead a reasonable person to suspect the existence of a wider conspiracy. Imagine a very smart leader of an extremist movement, one who understands the First Amendment and criminal conspiracy laws, telling his followers not to depend on specific instructions.

And there are many widespread organizations which are lead by “very smart leader[s]” check out what he had to say on a PBS Charlie Rose Show last year at: http://tinyurl.com/crkaf ; or look at what trouble the former agent has had since leaving the FBI at: http://tinyurl.com/7zyvr and his statement after the ACLU decided to represent him at: http://tinyurl.com/adcd4
