George Kenney: "Yasser Arafat's assassination, Polonium-210, with Dr. Patrice Mangin" @ Electric Politics

Dear Michael,

Welcome to the start of the EP podcast 2014 Winter season! Today's show is about whether Yasser Arafat was assassinated with Polonium-210. A little over a year ago three teams, from France, Switzerland, and Russia, exhumed Arafat's body and independently took samples to try to determine his cause of death. The French and the Russians concluded that he died of natural causes. The Swiss, however, say that their analyses "moderately support" the case for Polonium poisoning. I've read the Swiss report and, to be honest, I think their evidence and arguments could support a more strongly worded conclusion but I take their point that it will be nearly impossible to ever know for certain what happened. Anyhow, to get a better sense of the Swiss perspective I interviewed their lead author, Dr. Patrice Mangin, who -- I think it's fair to say -- is one of the world's top forensic pathologists.

If, in fact, Arafat was poisoned with Polonium, what does it mean? I still haven't figured that out...

Best,

g.
