The George Kenney Podcast: "Melanie Warner, "Pandora's Lunchbox" @ Electric Politics

Dear Michael,

I be back! And to start our current season my guest is Melanie Warner, author of Pandora's Lunchbox: How Processed Food Took Over the American Meal(Scribner, 2013). Melanie, a former New York Times staff writer, is careful not to be a polemicist but she doesn't have to be. She lets the facts speak for themselves and the facts about what gets put into and done to processed food (aka the "application" in industry parlance) are the stuff of nightmares. The vitamin D in your milk, for example, is almost surely a derivative -- after many chemical stages -- from lanolin from Australian sheep wool, concocted in a factory in China. Another example, Vitamin A, is often synthesized from Acetone, a principal ingredient in nail polish remover. The list goes on and on. And literally thousands of chemicals are routinely added to food products despite there being no studies of any kind to show that the chemicals are safe. To be honest, I thought I knew a little something about healthy eating but Melanie's book has really opened my eyes…

A light subject for the summer, n'est-ce pas?

Please see the EP site for more details about the next few weeks of our June/July schedule.

Thanks for listening!

Best,

g.
