The
event at the Kansas Statehouse was notable for its size, drawing people
from across the state. The Kansas Catholic Conference put the crowd
outdoors at about 4,000, but other estimates were higher.

Even
well-organized political rallies at the Statehouse typically draw only
in the hundreds, though anti-abortion groups have mustered larger
crowds. Brownback described it as the biggest Statehouse rally he's
seen, and participants endured a 100-degree afternoon.
"It's better to be hot here than hot in the hereafter, so it's OK to do some penance," said the Rev. Justin Nolan, of Kansas City, Kan., a member of the traditional Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.
The
event included readings from the Bible, the U.S. Constitution's First
Amendment and the Declaration of Independence, then closed with the
crowd singing, "Faith of Our Fathers."
Barbara Rew,
of Olathe, said she attended because she wants to protect the rights of
her 10 children, 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She said
she opposes contraception because it promotes "a mentality that children
are not blessings," leading to widespread abortion.
