[Excerpt from the movie notes.] ABOUT THE FIVE: GERARDO HERNANDEZ, RENE GONZALEZ, RAMON LABANINO, ANTONIO GUERRERO AND FERNANDO GONZALEZ ARE FIVE CUBAN MEN ARRESTED IN FLORIDA IN SEPTEMBER 1998. THEY WERE TRIED ANDCONVICTED OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT ESPIONAGE AND RELATED CHARGES. THEIR REAL “CRIME” WAS INFILTRATING MIAMI-BASED EXTREMIST GROUPS WITH A HISTORY OF VIOLENT ACTS AGAINST THE CUBAN PEOPLE INCLUDING BOMBINGS, BIOLOGICAL WARFARE AND ASSASSINATIONS. HUNDREDS HAVE DIED – THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN INJURED. “THE CUBAN FIVE” ENTERED THE UNITED STATES TO PREVENT FURTHER ACTS OF TERRORISM AND WHEN THEY UNCOVERED PLANS OF SABOTAGE, CUBAN OFFICIALS ALERTED THE FBI. INSTEAD OF ARRESTING THE TERRORISTS PLANNING THESE ACTS HOWEVER, THEY ARRESTED THESE FIVE ANTI-TERRORIST FIGHTERS. THE FIVE ARE SERVING SENTENCES RANGING FROM 15 YEARS TO DOUBLE LIFE.
