Back Bush's war strategy? Then give him your kids.

A NATION, UNDEFENDED.
RIPE FOR CALAMITY, MARTIAL LAW AND DICTATORSHIP?

Here is another established national expert telling us the military might of this country is broke and cannot defend itself against an invasion or a large scale catastrophe. Not a few here in Kansas, including Gov. Sebelius, have asked the "third rail" question.

If Kansas was hit with a natural disaster, or state wide civil unrest, how would the state government respond, without a National Guard?

And how will the equipment sent to Iraq and Afghanistan be replaced? Rumsfeld promised Sebelius that "2/3 would be replaced" by the federal government, "Rummy" is gone and nothing has been done in Kansas.

Joseph L. Galloway is former senior military correspondent for Knight Ridder Newspapers and co-author of the national best-seller "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young." He writes persuasively that the crisis is now upon us, and we should be preparing to sacrifice the lives of our children on the altar of the oil empire. Enough blood for you, yet?

He writes about the regular Army and Marines below.

Excerpt:

The brigades and divisions home from a deployment cannot be counted on in a major crisis. Most are immediately whittled down to 65 percent or 70 percent of their authorized strength upon their return home as hundreds and thousands of troops complete involuntary extensions of their enlistment or are assigned to military schools to study or teach. Most of their combat equipment, including armored vehicles, is left behind in the war zone to be used by their replacements.

The barrel has been scraped so hard and so often that it no longer even has a bottom.
