#1: ATTACK ON TURKISH JUDGES

On May 17, an armed attorney opened fire in the country’s highest court, killing one judge, Mustafa Yucel Ozbilgin, and seriously wounding four others while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is most great) and “I am a soldier of Allah.”  The perpetrator declared to police that he carried out the attack because the court had ruled that a woman who wore a headscarf could not be promoted to headteacher in an elementary school.

Since the foundation of modern Turkey, the headscarf issue has been a constant source of friction, as Kemal Ataturk, the country’s acknowledged leader in the 1920s, had prohibited it as a symbol of the subjugation of women.  The present government, under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is in large part Islamist, and appears to aim at weakening secularism.

After the attack, tens of thousands of ordinary citizens and political leaders marched to Ataturk’s tomb, in defense of secularism.  Turkey’s President, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, declared that “pressure and threats will not intimidate the Turkish judiciary, which will continue its constitutional duties bound to the secular and democratic republic.”

The same assailant participated in an attack on the secularist newspaper Cumhuriyet.

Messages of protest and solidarity may be directed to Prime Minister Erdogan at bilgi@basbakanlik.gov.tr, and to President Sezer at cumhurbaskanligi@tccb.gov.tr.

#2: NAZANIN CASE IN IRAN

On January 3, 2006, Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi, a young woman, was sentenced to death by a criminal court for murder in a case where she stabbed an assailant who with two others, had attempted to rape her and her niece.  At trial she stated the act was a matter of self-defense, but unless the Supreme Court of Iran reverses the decision, she will soon be executed by hanging.

While we have no information that Nazanin is a freethinker, we still encourage readers to protest such an unjust sentence.  Messages should be directed to His Excellency Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader, Government of Iran, Soahada Street, Qom, Islamic Republic of Iran, e-mail info@leader.ir.

#3: WRITER IMPRISONED IN IRAN

In late April, 2006, security officers arrested scholar Ramin Jahanbegloo, and transported him to the notorious Evin prison.  The minister of information told the press that he had ordered the arrest because of “his contacts with foreigners.”  Jahanbegloo earned a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne in Paris, and is the author of 20 books in English, French and Persian on topics of philosophy and culture.  Before his arrest, he was director of contemporary studies at Iran’s Cultural Research Bureau and an advocate of nonviolence and intercultural dialogue.”  The April 27 issue of Le Monde newspaper printed remarks by this Jahanbegloo critical of current policies of the Iranian government, and this was the likely cause of the arrest.

Letters or messages of concern and protest should be directed to Supreme Leader Khamenei, details in #2 above.

#4: BOOK REVIEW

Robert Spencer.  The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).  Regnery Publishing, Inc., One Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, DC 20001.  2005.  270pp.  Paperback.  $19.95.

Future historians of this book should consider that soon after its publication in the autumn of 2005, it quickly rose to a place on the New York Times bestseller list, before a single review ever appeared.  Indeed, as of this date (late November, 2005), the only reviews that have appeared are in a few conservative on-line sources such as Front Page.  How could it so quickly have been a success?

One factor was the author’s position as director of Jihad Watch, a valuable website (jihadwatch.org) which daily publishes short notices on current developments in the rise of militant Islamic fundamentalism.  Another was that Spencer had the good fortune of being invited to various radio programs around the country.  Not least is the simple fact that such a book was needed; that is, it is timely, and pulls no punches in its exposé of this variety of fundamentalism.  For not only were there the infamous attacks of September 11, 2001, but a multitude of terrorist events which followed: bombings, mutilations, and the like, continuing in many countries.

As the title suggests, the book is divided into two complementary sections, the first on Islam as such, and the second on the Crusades.  Unlike many “liberal” commentators, Spencer argues that we cannot really understand the Crusades, or indeed, contemporary history, without understanding the origins and character of Islam itself.  And also unlike most liberals, Spencer insists that from its beginning, Islam was militant, expansionist, and predatory.

The first chapter takes up the life of Muhammed, “Prophet of War.”  Here we read a dreary chronicle of assassination, deceit, and revenge.  The emphasis is on the role of Muhammed “the raider.”  When his own Quraysh tribe of Mecca rejected his prophecies, his “frustration and rage became evident.  When even his uncle, Abu Lahab, rejected his message, Muhammed cursed him and his wife in violent language that has been preserved in the Qur’an.”  The text (Qur’an 111:1-5) runs thus: “May the hands of Abu Lahab perish!  May he himself perish!  Nothing shall his wealth and gains avail him.  He shall be burnt in a flaming fire, and his wife, laden with faggots, shall have a rope of fiber around her neck!”  Subsequently, other tribal warriors in Medina accepted him as a prophet, and launched a series of raids which “kept the nascent Muslim movement solvent and helped form Islamic theology.”  Indeed, one could cogently argue, as Spencer does throughout this book, that from its origins, Islam arose as a series of daring raids by desert nomadic peoples against such cities as they encountered.

Time and time again, hundreds, then thousands of such warriors would appear as if out of nowhere, proclaiming to the astonished inhabitants of an encircled city that they would be spared if they immediately submitted to Allah and his Prophet.  Heavily outnumbered, they usually submitted; those who did not were duly put to the sword.  Women and children were sometimes killed as well, but on other occasions were “merely” enslaved.

As Islam proceeded with such conquests, extending within a century across many thousands of miles of territory, the victors realized that they needed some local survivors to provide even a minimal form of government.  This gave rise to the concept of the dhimmi—the people of “the book,” Jews and Christians who were given a subordinate status on the condition that they pay a heavy tax called the jizya.  Such “latitude” has given rise to what Spencer calls the PC myth of tolerance.  Forcing Jews to wear a distinguishing Star of David was one of the milder forms of submission.  One historian cited by Spencer states that “restrictions of all kinds, unlawful taxation, forced labor, persecutions, violence, imprisonment, death, abductions of girls and boys and their confinement to Turkish harems, and various deeds of wantonness and lust” were the fate of the dhimmi in 19th century Greece under the Ottomans.  Such harsh measures, such as assassinations, torture, mutilation and destruction of churches continue today, all carefully documented with extensive footnotes.

Muslims often argue that their religion respects women, whereas “western” societies degrade them.  Spencer cites numerous passages from the Qur’an stipulating that women are forever to be subordinate to men, including physical punishment for the unruly.  Thus verse 4:34: “Good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded.  As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them.”  Given such postulates, horrendous practices such as female circumcision are a logical conclusion, justified by leaders like the grand sheikh of al-Azhar in Egypt, “the highest spiritual authority for nearly a billion Sunni Muslims.”

Spencer establishes that these ideas and practices are not an aberration within Islam, but are intrinsic to it.  Of course, not every Muslim follows these precepts, and there has been resistance throughout history to them, including from women themselves, then as now brutally suppressed.

Well, some have argued, even so, Islamic societies have produced science, culture and art comparable to those of any advanced civilization.  Spencer’s answer to this is that “there was a time when Islamic culture was more advanced than that of Europeans, but that superiority corresponds exactly to the period when Muslims were able to draw on and advance the achievements of Byzantine and other civilizations.”  Jews and Christians within Islamic societies were often the source of achievements in science, philosophy and medicine inaccurately attributed to Muslims.  Of course, Muslim scholars began to participate in fields such as mathematics and optics, but the record was mixed insofar as the reinforcement of religious orthodoxy by figures like al-Ghazali (1058-1128) prevailed.  In his influential work The Incoherence of the Philosophers, al-Ghazali attacked the “denial of revealed laws and religious confessions” and “rejection of the details of religious and sectarian [teaching], believing them to be man-made laws and embellished tricks.”  The result was a many-centuries-long stagnation of Islamic societies.  In other words, Spencer charges Islam not only with psychological brutalization, but with philosophical and cultural repression, all of which continue abated to the present day.

The second section of the book takes up the Crusades, and here Spencer’s discussion runs into real problems.  He cogently argues that in some degree, the Crusades, which began out of contests and disputes with Byzantium over territorial control in the 10th century, were an attempt by Christians to “take back” what the Muslims had seized.  Spencer is too honest to just ignore the various horrors carried out by the Crusaders, such as the pogroms against Jews in Germany, but he argues that these were more or less incidental to the broader enterprise.  If, however, he has successfully argued that predatory war was “essential” to Islam, how can he argue the same for the abuses by the Crusaders, which included the slaughter of everyone in Jerusalem in 1099.

“The Crusaders’ sack of Jerusalem was a heinous crime,” Spencer admits, “particularly in light of the religious and moral principles they professed to uphold.  However, by the military standards of the day, it was not out of the ordinary.”  What is “ordinary” then?  The “rivers of blood” in contemporary accounts, says Spencer, are but “a rhetorical flourish.”  Rather lamely, he suggests “there weren’t enough people in Jerusalem to bleed that much.”  Citation of other contemporary slaughters of Christians by Muslims doesn’t exactly help his case. The fact is, much of history is filled with horrors perpetrated in the name of religion—whether Muslim, Christian, or Jewish (read the Old Testament for details of the latter).

The motto at the beginning of Spencer’s book is Deus Vult!—“God wills it!—the famous (or infamous) battle cry of the Crusaders.  Searching the Internet for information as to Spencer’s own personal religious affiliation, I learned that he is a Melkite Christian (Catholic Report, September 22, 2005, at catholicreport.org).  Thus he has, if we may use the _expression, a personal ax to grind here.  Any author is of course entitled to have such a perspective, but readers should be clear that Spencer’s view is that of a conservative Christian.  It is thus that his book drew advanced publicity praise from conservative and neo-conservative writers such as Michelle Malkin, Bat Ye’or and Serge Trifkovic.

This does not at all mean that Spencer’s book can be ignored.  Indeed, writers from this perspective have arguably been more perceptive about Islam’s political trajectory than more blinkered liberals.  The great value of Spencer’s book is its marshalling of a great deal of information of which the general public and even scholars are ignorant.

His publisher, Regnery, is a venerable conservative house, notable for a long list of stolid and rather boring titles.  With this series of “Politically Incorrect Guides,” some of which have been rather harshly reviewed previously, they embark on a new course.  This book’s virtues, aside from its main arguments, are attractive sidebars (including some splendid quotations from such as John Quincy Adams and Winston Churchill), careful documentation, and clear, accessible design.  While Spencer’s book ignores or minimizes the depredations of Christianity (consider the position of women in that religion!), it is still a relevant and valuable contribution to the field of Islamic studies.

#5: RESOURCES

Robert Spencer’s website, jihadwatch.org, not only follows current developments concerning militant Islam, but has a subsidiary site for which a link is supplied, called dhimmiwatch, which follows controversies concerning accommodations to Islam in the West.  There are links to numerous other websites, of varying quality, with conservative ones predominant.  I have been a regular reader of postings on jihadwatch, and have noted that while the main viewpoints are conservative, Christian and “western-centric,” the focus is on evidence rather than simple name-calling or bigotry.

A website that publishes a regular online “magazine” every two months is www.middleastwomen.org under the direction of Azam Kamguian in London.  Also based in London is Houzan Mahmoud, one of the leading figures of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI).  Her blog is another good way to keep up with regional developments, at http://houzanmahmoud.blogspot.com.

The International Freedom of _Expression Exchange (IFEX) operates out of Toronto, and since 1992 has defended “those who have the courage to insist upon their fundamental human right to free _expression” when they are “censored, brutalized or killed.”  The IFEX has campaigns, spotlight reports and an enormously helpful set of links to related sites.  On the links I found the Beacon for Freedom of _Expression, supported by the government of Norway, with an informative short account of the great ancient libraries and research centers of Alexandria, as well as special reports on the history of censorship in Norway itself, and a list of the books included on the Index of Prohibited Books of the Catholic Church, which was promulgated on its claim of authority for 400 years.  For IFEX, go to ifex.org, and for the Beacon, go to beaconforfreedom.org.

We have now received “An Introduction to Reality”—a CD-ROM produced by the remarkable and diligent Emmett Fields of Louisville, Kentucky.  Among many other Freethought works on this disk are Joseph McCabe’s 40 volume set “Key to Culture,” originally published by E. Haldeman-Julius in Girard, Kansas.  McCabe presents the basic facts of physics, astronomy, geology, biochemistry, paleontology, botany, zoology, comparative anatomy, anthropology, philology, embryology, psychology, history, literature, political science, economics, art, and philosophy, which in times past would have consisted of a good high school education in America, but now would approximate the first two years of college if not more.  I read through a large part of the volume on Logic, and found it a masterful exposition.  McCabe moved from being a Catholic to a status as “the world’s greatest scholar” and a dedicated Freethinker.  The same disk includes McCabe’s “Why I Left the Church,” and his 100-page book “The History and Meaning of the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books,” and more books by other authors—all this for $25 plus postage!  Fields has also reissued Watson Heston’s hilarious collection of cartoons from 1892, “The Bible Comically Illustrated” in CD-ROM format.  For details, go to bank-of-wisdom.com or write PO Box 926, Louisville, KY 40201.

For details on the journal of the ICPF, Brave Minds, direct an e-mail to diahumanism-institute@sympatico.ca, or write PO Box 41153, Elmvale, 1910 St. Laurent Blvd., Ottawa, Ont. K1G 5K9, CANADA.  The journal has now reached several issues, and is a unique source for analysis and documentation of the contemporary defense of Freethinkers, and the historical context in depth.

CIA Terror flights: US collaborators in 14 European countries lied

CIA TERROR FLIGHTS: US COLLABORATORS IN 14 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES LIED

Bush said: 'We do not torture', but today an EU investigation is accusing 14 European countries of crimes against humanity. Proving they criminally collaborate with the US Gulag program of secret jails and torture. They have known about the CIA torture flights before: it became 'official' on January 22, 2003.

by Henk Ruyssenaars

FPF - Amsterdam - June 7th 2006 -
Asked in British Parliament last December concerning Amnesty International's reports of at least 400 CIA torture flights flights passing through British airports, UK Prime minister Tony Blair said: "In respect of airports, I don't know what you are referring to." Dutch PM Balkenende when asked in parliament like all other EU stooges lied - and keeps lying - the same way.

The same PM however takes part in a so called 'government' hypocritically calling itself 'christian', but which permanently has been lying about it's complicity in the US terror flights and global genocide. There are tons of evidence concerning the EU top's punishable complicity in all the war crimes, and more is presented today.

An EU investigation is expected to accuse 14 countries in Europe, including Britain, of being involved in the CIA program of rendition, terror and secret detention of terrorist suspects. According to 'The Telegraph' (UK): ''Swiss senator Dick Marty will describe what he calls a "spider's web" of rendition flights which has enveloped Europe, according to reports.''

Even if this news is played down - underreported - as much as is possible, it is a fact that all US collaborators in 14 European countries lied. They without shame nor compassion keep lying to the people who pay them, the taxpayers which employ them. Those 'dirty and musty gamers' all have known - at least since the European Union's Athens meeting on January 22, 2003.

But cowardly - and contrary to their duty as our, and by us paid representatives - they all kept silent concerning the atrocities after talks with the US delegation headed by a justice department official. Our personal which clearly neglected it's duty and human rights, should be fired and be tried in court for their war crimes.

THE CRIMINALS ARE SILENT ABOUT THEIR ONGOING GENOCIDES IN THE ILLEGAL WARS

According to The Telegraph: ''EU officials confirmed that a full account was circulated to all member governments, and would have been sent to the Home Office.'' They were all informed and they all lied. The document, entitled: 'New Transatlantic Agenda, EU-US meeting on Justice and Home Affairs' - details the subjects discussed by the 31 people present. The agenda included the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and extradition agreements. They all knew and shut up about those crimes against humanity.

The Amnesty International reports on the inhuman US warfare and the spreading american Gulag* was suppressed as much as was possible too. The usual pundits -  the prompter propagandists - were misinforming about the 'liberation of Iraq and Afghanistan', where everybody was oh so happy! with the occupiers, excuse me: liberators.

But last night even one of the worst propaganda sewers right now, the BBC, in it's Newsnight program couldn't get around it, and had to confirm that the UK was implicated as a collaborating "stop-off point" for torture flights.

EU investigator Marty said something which surprised nobody: ''My efforts were hindered by a lack of co-operation by EU governments''. Mr. Marty's investigation by the way ran parallel to a probe by the European Parliament, which had the data from Eurocontrol at it's disposal, the EU's air traffic agency, showing there have been more than 1000 clandestine CIA terror flights stopping on European territory since the 'false flag' September 11 attacks in the US, the by the PNAC pack orchestrated 'New Pearl Harbor'.*

Last April, a report published by the human rights group Amnesty International also found more than 1000 flights linked to the CIA and the US's "murky system of captures, transfers and secret detention" of terror suspects. Global locations include Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, [Poland, Rumania] and Guantanamo Bay - [endquotes]

REVELATION CONTRADICTS REPEATED EU DENIALS

In December last year one could read in the Telegraph: ''The European Union secretly allowed the United States to use transit facilities on European soil to transport 'criminals' in 2003, according to a previously unpublished document.

The revelation contradicts repeated EU denials that it knew of "rendition" flights by the CIA. The EU agreed to give America access to facilities - presumably airports - in confidential talks in Athens during which the war on terror was discussed, the original minutes show.

BUT ALL REFERENCES TO THE AGREEMENT WERE DELETED FROM THE RECORD BEFORE IT WAS PUBLISHED.

The minutes of the Athens meeting on January 22, 2003, were written by the then Greek presidency of the EU after the talks with a US delegation headed by a justice department official. EU officials confirmed that a full account was circulated to all member governments, and would have been sent to the Home Office.

The document, entitled New Transatlantic Agenda, EU-US meeting on Justice and Home Affairs, details the subjects discussed by the 31 people present. The agenda included the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and extradition agreements.

In the full version it says: "Both sides agreed on areas where co-operation could be improved [inter alia] the exchange of data between border management services, increased use of European transit facilities to support the return of criminal/ inadmissible aliens, co-ordination with regard to false documents training and improving the co-operation in removals."

But this section, and others referring to US policy, were deleted - as a "courtesy" to Washington, according to a spokesman for the EU Council of Ministers.

THE EU COUNCIL - OUR PERSONAL - IS HOLDING THE ROPES FOR THE HENCHMEN

Washington has been angered by the growing EU people's protests about the movement and alleged abuse of terror suspects. John 'Bellicose' Bellinger, senior legal adviser, spin spouter and liar to the US State Department, said on BBC radio:

"Some of the allegations more broadly about all sorts of things are ludicrous. These allegations that we have these activities going on in the hundreds over Europe, and that we are going to take people off to be mistreated, are simply untrue."

You're not supposed to know that!

Big Oil and Cheney’s trips coincide with “new Cold War”

Here is a peek into “a regime that has something to hide” as Bush described Saddam’s Iraq to the American people in justifying the invasion, but what I am relating to you is what Bush and Cheney’s Big Energy buddies are doing behind the scenes to the American people.

Truthout’s web site editor called it one of the most important articles to be read “this month.” That is some great kind of heavy duty endorsement.

It is located at: Cheney Starts New Cold War Over Oil and the study of the behind the scene agreements extend all over Central Asia and into Russia’s backyard and encompass U. S. military bases, the seeming unstoppable “military industrial complex” extending its reach across the world.

A faith - based greenback - slipping away?

You can count on one thing – the coming crisis is not being manufactured under the watchful eyes of the Pentagon planners.

It is slowly and quietly, for right now, slipping into a cyclical economic crisis and the question is will it fall by a “controlled demolition” or tailspin into a free fall.

Mike Whitney writes:

Even if the administration’s plans in the Middle East succeed, there are
stormy times ahead for the greenback. The United States has reached an
unsustainable level of debt in government, business and personal finances.
Personal savings are down, mortgage payments are up, and credit card debt is
higher than ever. The entire country is mired in swamp of red ink for which
there is no easy remedy.

James Shepherd, President of JAS
MTS Inc. puts it this way:
“
A perfect storm is
developing and much of this danger has to do with debt. …
When a
saturation point of debt and leverage is reached, even a minor dislocation can
cause a dramatic collapse….Debtors are always punished more severely in a
declining economy because, as activity subsides, they are less able to service
their debt and the value of the assets that have collateralized are also
falling. Once those that own real estate realize that their neighbors cannot
service their mortgages and are forced to sell at almost any price, thereby
driving down the perceived value of their own property, the conditions necessary
for a full-fledged debt-driven meltdown will be in place…
a severe
recession - is about to sweep over the landscape and blow away those who are not
prepared
.”

The predictions of Warren Buffett,
Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, are equally sobering:

“There are deep-rooted structural problems that
will cause America to continue to run a huge current-account deficit unless
trade policies either change materially or the dollar declines by a degree that
could prove unsettling to financial markets. Indeed, without policy changes,
currency markets could become disorderly and generate spill-over
effects, both political and financial
.” (Quotes form Dudley Baker,
“Ominous Warnings and Dire Predictions of World’s Financial
Experts”)

“Could the falling dollar lead to “political turmoil”, as
Buffett suggests?

The Organization for Economic
Cooperation (O.E.C.D.) has joined skeptics at the IMF in predicting that the
dollar will fall by 35% to 50% in order to balance current account deficits.
These are modest predictions given the enormous amount of debt the US has
accumulated in just the last 6 years. ($3 trillion) Consider how life for the
average American will change when gas is $6 per gallon rather than $3; when
groceries skyrocket to twice their normal price, and when life-savings are cut
in half overnight.

Peak Oil: Left, Right & Middle

Peak Oil – get the reading glasses out, a healthy debate from all sides is shaping up for Americans.

It’s going to get more and more strange as the super corporations start “going green.” Wal-Mart is pouring advertising money into National Public Radio, public television and Chevron is paying for full page ads in large daily newspapers to clean up their image. The Peak Oil issue is getting out there, sample some of what I’ve found in the last two weeks.

A Classic Liberal mentions “it” …

Bill Moyers lent his opinion recently about the future to a graduating class at Clinton, New York’s Hamilton College and apparently did not receive the protests from students that Sen. McCain or Secretary of State Rice received. In fact, Moyers spoke up and delivered a rather honest look to just what kind of world we are leaving our children. I got a big kick out of the fact he is reading two of the three books I just finished this last winter.

Part of his speech below will give you a taste.

Frankly, I'm not sure anyone from my generation should be saying anything
to your generation except, "We're sorry. We're really sorry for the mess you're
inheriting. We are sorry for the war in Iraq. For the huge debts you will have
to pay for without getting a new social infrastructure in return. We're sorry
for the polarized country. The corporate scandals. The corrupt politics. Our
imperiled democracy. We're sorry for the sprawl and our addiction to oil and for
all those toxins in the environment. Sorry about all this, class of 2006. Good
luck cleaning it up."

You're going to have your hands full, frankly. I don't need to
tell you of the gloomy scenarios being written for your time. Three books on my
desk right now question whether human beings will even survive the 21st century.
Just listen to their titles: The
Long Emergency: Surviving the Convergence Catastrophe
; Collapse:
How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
; The
Winds of Change: Weather and the Destruction of Civilizations
.

These
are just three of the recent books that make the apocalypse prophesied in the
Bible...the Revelations of St. John...look like child's play. I won't summarize
them for you except to say that they spell out Doomsday scenarios for global
catastrophe. There's another recent book called The
Revenge of Gaia
that could well have been subtitled, "The Earth Strikes
Back," because the author, James Lovelock, says human consumption, our obsession
with technology, and our habit of "playing God" are stripping bare nature's
assets until the Earth's only consolation will be to take us down with her.

Before this century is over, he writes, "Billions of us will die and the
few breeding pairs of people that survive will be kept in the Arctic where the
climate remains tolerable." So there you have it: The future of the race, to be
joined in a final and fatal march of the penguins.

Moyer’s complete speech (well worth the time reading it) is available at: Pass the Bread

But there is more … from the Free Market folks

The Adam Smith tribe is getting into the act by beating the phony ‘free market’ bongos yet again, from the political right with Lewis J. Walker’s condescending dictates to the investing hordes looking for something in the economic soup kettle.

He writes at Free Market News Network:

Every sensational theory about the future attracts pessimists and optimists, and
Peak Oil has futurists all over the map. Dr. Mark Jaccard is an economist
focusing on sustainable energy systems. A professor in the School of Resource
Management at Canada’s Simon Fraser University, Dr. Jaccard is author of a 2005
book, Sustainable Fossil Fuels: An Unusual Suspect in the Quest for Clean and
Enduring Energy (Cambridge University Press). Says he: “The doom-and-gloom
forecasts for gas, coal and oil are wrong…reports of the death of fossil fuels
are greatly exaggerated.” The professor opines that oil, gas, and coal will
still meet 58 percent of global energy needs by 2100.”

Daniel Yergin,
author of The Prize, his 1991 Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the oil
industry, rejects many of the theories that global production is about to tank:
“This is the fifth time we’ve run out of oil since the 1880s.” (USA Today,
10/16/05).

Take it for what it’s worth these folks are all into any crooked scheme to make a buck 24/7/365 and it’s all okay as long as they make the buck.

But the outstanding EnergyBulletin.net Peak Oil News Clearinghouse which first started me down this trail pointed out to those that just have to make a buck and dump their money into something with the following:

Walker mentions Hubbert, Deffeyes, Daniel Yergin, the Hirsch Report and other
big names. The problem is that this isn't analysis -- it's free-market
cracker-barrel wisdom, interspersed with quotes and anecdotes. Cracker-barrel
wisdom works well in stable periods of little change, but not at historical
inflection points. For business people and investors, Peter Tertzakian's recent
book "A Thousand Barrels a Second" is
a much better guide to the issues. Byron King who publishes
in Energy Bulletin
is also an excellent source.

And more from the politically slippery Hillary Clinton …

She recently gave what sounded like a campaign stump speech to the National Press Club detailing some of her proposals on energy policy beginning with describing energy security concerns:

Our present system of energy is weakening our national security, hurting our
pocketbooks, violating our common values, and threatening our children's future.
Right now, instead of national security dictating our energy policy, our failed
energy policy dictates our national security. We would never leave 10 percent of
our military or intelligence assets vulnerable to an easy attack, but that's
what we've allowed to happen with oil.

Just one terminal in Saudi Arabia
handles about one out of every 12 barrels of the world's oil exports. That's
enough to trigger a new crisis beyond the scale of the 1970s, if it were cut
off. One terrorist attack has already been foiled there, and other threats have
been made.

Note that she has not offered to withdraw troops from Iraq,
but her speech does go into specific details on the creation of various funding
programs for energy research, including a windfall tax on the mega – profits
from Big Oil. However she is a long way from acknowledging the cataclysmic
potential of Peak Oil and the societal crisis it portends for “the American way
of life.”

Her complete speech was transcribed by the important Raw Story internet news organization at: Clinton unveils plan to reduce oil imports by 50%

And BBC’s Greg Palast gets C – Span jam on his face on Mother’s Day!

Get it while you can! A whole hour of Palast and R. Emmett Tyrell, American Spectator magazine get slammed together, a “free market” conservative elder v. investigative journalist plugging his book on M$M (and keeps a grin on his face). Palast keeps soap boxing from an oil drum. Tyrell scolds and redbaits Palast as a “socialist” and “conpiracist” and early on offers to leave the C – Span seat for “the John Birch Society.”

Palast drops a small oil news bomb about Chavez announcing this week that Venezuela has more proven heavy crude oil reserves than Saudi Arabia. Palast also makes a rather curious statement about just how much oil there is and Chavez’s intention to stabilize the market at a $50.00 margin with the Bush administration’s cooperation.

This program ostentatious purpose was to plug Palast’s new hilarious and scathing book, Armed Madhouse but one wouldn’t understand it without C – Span’s referee (and new White House Correspondent Association’s president) who had to repeatedly intervene and steer the slugging back to the text of the book. Callers from Scotland to Texas got in the act.

Then within days here comes a confusing direction from Palast Guerilla News about No Peaking: The Hubbert Humbug followed almost immediately with Why Palast Is Wrong written by Palast concerning energy cartels and depletion?

This video segment is available at this C-SPAN site under “Most Recently Watched Segments” category. It will quickly disappear into the organizations archives after 15 days.

But wait, … there is some good local journalism getting out there!

And thanks, again to Energy Bulletin for steering us to it! A southern university touches bases with local researchers and scientists doing something about the perfect storm of catastrophes ahead. How far off the deep end is this news?

And the Brits are definitely cranking out the docu – dramas with a May 30 BBC – Channel 2 release of If... The Oil Runs Out. Could this effort be as significant in preparing the fair island people of the North Atlantic with the 1985 classic "Edge of Darkness"?

We Americans really don’t get it … here is a crack shot by James Howard Kunstler on The Suburban Fantasy at Common Dreams which might be his latest attempt at initiating and answering the pertinent and largely ignored question: Is it even possible these days to define a valid doctrine of political Progressivism?

I encourage readers to check out his essay agitating, as unique and humorous as he is at: Clusterfuck Nation by Jim Kunstler : Progress and scroll down through the comment section for the line: “We are the gluttonous 500 lb fatman who raids the cafeteria and devours everything before the rest of the employees take their lunch break.”

Sorta makes one sick watching the festivities during this “holiday.”

"WE ARE MORE THAN THE GENERALS."

West Point Graduates Against The War:

Now Is The Time

By James Ryan
05/15/06

Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.
- Julius Caesar

Why?

We members of West Point Graduates Against The War stand appalled at the deceitful behavior of the government of the United States and, in particular, its widely known malefactors. Their lying, cheating, stealing, and rendition of evasive statements not only has demeaned these deceivers and our country, but they have placed vast numbers of innocent people in deadly peril as a direct result of their deceptions.

We will not serve these lies, that is, we will not work for, be a servant to, provide for, assist, or promote the interests of this dishonorable administration. By remaining silent we tacitly serve; we are no longer silent.

The illegal assault and occupation in Iraq has killed tens of thousands of innocents, both American, Iraqi, and others, causing incalculable damage to Iraq and the Iraqi people, as well as the reputation and honor of the United States of America. The behavior of this administration is particularly odious since it makes mockery of the code of conduct instilled in us at West Point. "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do." This has provided us with a lifelong respect for the truth, and a sense of responsibility to do the right thing, even if that means admonishing our country's leadership.

Our position may be counter to the opinion of many of our fellow graduates. Our views are most probably not the views of the official institution that is West Point. It does its work, we ours. Yet, we are undeniably full-blown products of that place, trademarked by the West Point way of behavior. "Duty, Honor, Country," the motto of the Academy, our watchwords, as well. And we express our views as an organization of graduates, as retired generals of similar pedigree express their own. The difference? There are more of us than there are generals.

What?

Admiral John Paul Jones, the father of the American navy, said it best. "I would lay down my life for America, but I cannot trifle with my honor." This administration has done neither. Chicken hawks in wolves' clothing, they have been derelict in duty, honor, and country. Consider their sending under-equipped troops into battle under false pretenses, the widely-known ignoring of First Amendment protections of the Constitution, the "quaintness" of the Geneva Convention, or Colin Powell's ill-starred, mendacious UN presentation. Their lies and misleading statements, detailed in so many places, have become epic. They tried to make their case. They failed. Facts and time have proven these people untrustworty and incompetent. They lied, tens of thousands died, and that is a moral tragedy.

Shamelessly, the president of the United States mocks his own deceitful behavior at White House Correspondents' Dinners. People have perished from his infamous words, and he and his ilk, and the ilk of journalists, all guffaw and wink and preen. Duty, Honor, Country? Be serious.

Who?

We are graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York who are against the war in Iraq, and any other future wars similarly premised. Our ranks include sons, daughters, and spouses of deceased graduates. All of us stand in common cause against the deceitful policies and lies of the Bush administration. We are heartened by supporters from all over the world, but particularly the American taxpayers who gave and maintain the life of the institution that bore us into the adult world of service to our country.

And, in that spirit, we now act.

We are not politicians, professional media pundits, retired generals, peace-at-any-price activists, conscientious objectors, Communists or traitors. We seek to overthrow nothing. Except the pattern of deceit by this administration that has so sorely damaged this country, its standing in the world, and the world itself. We have no historic legacy of public life that we are out to maintain because we have had no public life. We are ordinary people, forged by one unforgettable unifying experience - West Point. We studied there, we trained there, we were inspired there. We are the voice of a growing band of men and women, graduates of West Point, not perfect people, but honorable.

And we speak for the many who, because of their circumstance, are reluctant or unable to speak. We call likeminded graduates of West Point to stand with us and speak out against the deceitful policies of this administration, and the resulting destruction of the honor of the United States, and the dissipation of its military.

Alarum and call to action

Say no to preventive war. Heed President Eisenhower's words. "When people speak to you about a preventive war," he said, "you tell them to go and fight it."

Say no to torture. Demand that the United States government respect the conventions of war.

We must lead by example, preserving some aspect of humanity in the carnage and devastation. Today, we gaze into the abyss of perpetual war. Be aware, as Nietzsche warned, "If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." Say no to the trashing of the honor of our country. Stay the forked tongues of this deplorable administration.

This is not a partisan issue. Both sides of the legislative chambers have aided and abetted this corrupt administration. We exhort everyone to stand with us and to write to their political representatives. We will do the same. Tell them that you don't appreciate their silence on these vital issues. Tell them to support and defend the Constitution as they have sworn to do. Demand honorable behavior from all public officials. Tell them how you feel about what THEY have allowed to happen to our country.

And tell them that we, West Point Graduates Against The War, sent you. Tell them that we stand with you. It's the truth!

"Now is the time!" Martin Luther King said long ago. Indeed, NOW is the time. We live on the precipice of yet another "arranged" war. This time it's Iran. As in Iraq, the demonization is well underway. The dogs of war are foaming and gnashing. Deja vu all over again, or, as we used to say at West Point, S.O.S, "Same Old Stuff," or words to that effect.

And all this in the name of homeland security. Please be serious.

As Dwight Eisenhower said, "If all that Americans want is security, they can go to prison. They'll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government."

Today, we have clear intimations of just such a government. We think that Americans are not so easily cowed, and that the vast majority demands far more than a diet of false statements, and confinement in endless, immoral wars.

New voices can change the world. They always have.

Stand with us!

THE SPIES WHO SHAG US

The Times and USA Today have Missed the Bigger Story: Again

by Greg Palast

I know you're shocked -- SHOCKED! -- that George Bush is listening in on all your phone calls.  Without a warrant.  That's nothing.  And it's not news.

This is: the snooping into your phone bill is just the snout of the pig of a strange, lucrative link-up between the Administration's Homeland Security spy network and private companies operating beyond the reach of the laws meant to protect us from our government.  You can call it the privatization of the FBI -- though it is better described as the creation of a private KGB.

***************************************************************************************

The leader in the field of what is called "data mining," is a company, formed in 1997, called, "ChoicePoint, Inc," which has sucked up over a billion dollars in national security contracts.

Worried about Dick Cheney listening in Sunday on your call to Mom?  That ain't nothing.  You should be more concerned that they are linking this info to your medical records, your bill purchases and your entire personal profile including, not incidentally, your voting registration.  Five years ago, I discovered that ChoicePoint had already gathered 16 billion data files on Americans -- and I know they've expanded their ops at an explosive rate.

THEY ARE PAID TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOU  -- BECAUSE THE FBI CAN'T.

For the government to collect this stuff is against the law unless you're suspected of a crime.  (The law in question is the Constitution.)  But ChoicePoint can collect if for "commercial" purchases -- and under the Bush Administration's suspect reading of the Patriot Act -- our domestic spying apparatchiks can then BUY the info from ChoicePoint.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS SELLING GEORGE BUSH A PIECE OF YOU?

ChoicePoint's board has more Republicans than a Palm Beach country club.  It was funded, and its board stocked, by such Republican sugar daddies as billionaires Bernie Marcus and Ken Langone -- even after Langone was charged by the Securities Exchange Commission with abuse of inside information.

I first ran across these guys in 2000 in Florida when our Guardian/BBC team discovered the list of 94,000 "felons" that Katherine Harris had ordered removed from Florida's voter rolls before the election.  Virtually every voter purged was innocent of any crime except, in most cases, Voting While Black.  Who came up with this electoral hit list that gave Bush the White House?  ChoicePoint, Inc.

AND WORSE, THEY KNEW THE RACIALLY-TAINTED LIST OF FELONS WAS BOGUS.

AND WHEN WE CAUGHT THEM, THEY LIED ABOUT IT.

While they've since apologized to the NAACP, ChoicePoint's ethnic cleansing of voter rolls has been amply assuaged by the man the company elected.

And now ChoicePoint and George Bush want your blood.  Forget your phone bill.  ChoicePoint, a sickened executive of the company told us in confidence, "hope[s] to build a database of DNA samples from every person in the United States ...linked to all the other information held by CP [ChoicePoint]" from medical to voting records.

And ChoicePoint lied about that too.  The company publicly denied they gave DNA to the Feds -- but then told our investigator, pretending to seek work, that ChoicePoint was "the number one" provider of DNA info to the FBI.

"And that scares the hell out of me," said the executive (who has since left the company), because ChoicePoint gets it WRONG so often.   We are not contracting out our Homeland Security to James Bond here.  It's more like Austin Powers, Inc.  Besides the 97% error rate in finding Florida "felons," Illinois State Police fired the company after discovering ChoicePoint had produced test "results" on rape case evidence ... that didn't exist.  And ChoicePoint just got hit with the largest fine in Federal Trade Commission history for letting identity thieves purchase 145,000 credit card records.

But it won't stop, despite Republican senators shedding big crocodile tears about "surveillance" of innocent Americans.  That's because FEAR is a lucrative business -- not just for ChoicePoint, but for firms such as Syntech, Sybase and Lockheed-Martin -- each of which has provided lucrative posts or profits to connected Republicans including former Total Information Awareness chief John Poindexter (Syntech), Marvin Bush (Sybase) and Lynn Cheney (Lockheed-Martin).

BUT HOW CAN THEY GET AMERICANS TO GIVE UP OUR PERSONAL FILES, OUR PHONE LOGS, OUR DNA AND OUR RIGHTS?

Easy.  Fear sells better than sex -- and they want you to be afraid.  Back to today's New York Times, page 28: "Wider Use of DNA Lists is Urged in Fighting Crime."  And who is providing the technology?   It comes, says the Times, from the work done on using DNA fragments to identity victims of the September 11 attack.  And who did that job (for $12 million, no bid)?  ChoicePoint, Inc.  Which is NOT mentioned by the Times.

"Genetic surveillance would thus shift from the individual [the alleged criminal] to the family," says the Times -- which will require, of course, a national DNA database of
NON-criminals.

It doesn't end there.  Turn to the same newspaper, page 23, with a story about a weird new law passed by the state of Georgia to fight illegal immigration.  Every single employer and government agency will be required to match citizen or worker data against national databases to affirm citizenship. It won't stop illegal border crossing, but hey, someone's going to make big bucks on selling data.  And guess what local boy owns the data mine?  ChoicePoint, Inc., of Alpharetta, Georgia.

The knuckleheads at the Times don't put the three stories together because the real players aren't in the press releases their reporters re-write.

But that's the Fear Industry for you.  You aren't safer from terrorists or criminals or "felon" voters.  But the national wallet is several billion dollars lighter and the Bill of Rights is a couple amendments shorter.

And that's their program.  They get the data mine - and we get the shaft.

The "Shadows on [our] faces."

There is “Blood in the Ink on the Headlines.”
In Windows Media player, a great new music video to a classic song is breaking out in acoustic across the net – click here to watch and listen.

I am betting many of you can’t watch it from beginning to end.

It is time to start getting serious about surviving to resist through the twists and turns of history ahead.

I am so glad to hear so many artists making their artful criticisms available to so many worldwide.

Who likes having an international reputation of being a bunch of dumbass redneck killers for Christ.

Peru, El Salvador, Columbia, the list goes on and on – countries all over the world should know that many Americans despise financing the war criminals in high places, teaching our children to kill, destroying all the innocents abroad.

We too, “can’t take it anymore.”

Thanks to Jackson Browne for having enough musical guts [and] “bricks and stones” in America to fight back.

New Pentagon Doctrine: Mini-Nukes are "Safe for the Surrounding Civilian Population" (part 2)

The World is at a Critical Cross-roads

It is not Iran which is a threat to global security but the United States of America and Israel.

In recent developments, Western European governments --including the so-called "non-nuclear states" which  possess nuclear weapons-- have joined the bandwagon. In chorus, Western Europe and the member states of the Atlantic alliance (NATO) have endorsed the US-led military initiative against Iran.

The Pentagon's planned aerial attacks on Iran involve "scenarios" using both nuclear and conventional weapons. While this does not imply the use of nuclear weapons, the potential danger of a Middle East nuclear holocaust must, nonetheless, be taken seriously. It must become a focal point of the antiwar movement, particularly in the United States, Western Europe, Israel and Turkey.

It should also be understood that China and Russia are (unofficially) allies of Iran, supplying them with advanced military equipment and a sophisticated missile defense system. It is unlikely that China and Russia will take on a passive position if and when the aerial bombardments are carried out.

The new preemptive nuclear doctrine calls for the "integration" of "defensive" and "offensive" operations. Moreover, the important distinction between conventional and nuclear weapons has been blurred..

Reported allegations of Mossad assassinating 530 Iraqi scientists

Concerning: Mossad murdered 530 Iraqi scientists

One warning however, because al Jazeera as such can not be trusted anymore. It has been bought by 'them' and tries to avoid the impression that it's now like the BBC: Broadcasting Blair's Crap. So they'll broadcast 25% more or less critical items (alibi journalism) and the rest is the usual lies and PNAC propaganda. This is what I earlier wrote: ''David Frost 'front man' at al-Jazeera International? - For many international observers the straw that broke the camel's back, was the announcement that former BBC newsman 'Sir' David Frost - a friend of Blair - would become some kind of international figurehead for al Jazeera International.'' - Friends of al Jazeera - Url.: http://www.friendsofaljazeera.org/node/223

AL JAZEERA AND THE D-NOTICE: There is NO Freedom of the Press - nor opinion for that matter. Concerning the censorship by 'The Group' in London owning most of the propaganda press: "How free are the press and broadcasting media in Britain? The external constraints are quite well known ‹ though their range and scope may not be. For example, the broadcasting laws allow the Home Secretary complete control over all broadcasting content." - Url.: http://www.serendipity.li/cda/dnot.html

Mossad murdered 530 Iraqi scientists

ASSASSINATIONS OF IRAQ ACADEMICS IN IRAQ NEVER EXISTED PRIOR TO APRIL 2003

5/9/2006 - Numerous reports for many months have stated that with collaboration from American occupation forces, Israel¹s espionage apparatus, Mossad, slaughtered at least 530 Iraqi scientists and academic professors.

Persistent Israeli hit squads against Iraqi scientists had been active in Iraq since April 2003, but the latest chapter was uncovered on Tuesday, 14 June 2005 by the Palestine Information Center which, citing a report compiled by the United States Department of State and intended for the American President, stated that Israeli and foreign agents sent by Mossad, in cooperation with United States, to Iraq, killed at least 350 Iraqi scientists and more than 200 university professors and academic personalities .

According to the report, which was referred to the U.S. president George W. Bush, Mossad agents had been operating in Iraq with the aim of liquidating Iraqi nuclear and biology scientists, among other scientists, and prominent university professors.

THAT WAS AFTER THE U.S. FAILED TO PERSUADE THOSE SCIENTISTS TO COOPERATE WITH OR WORK FOR IT.

"Israeli commandos had been operating on Iraqi territory for more than a year, the focus of their activities being the assassination of Iraqi scientists and intellectuals. The Zionists resorted to the large-scale assassination campaign after the failure of American efforts that started immediately after the American occupation of Iraq, aimed at attracting a number of Iraqi scientists to cooperate and go to work in the United States,² The Palestine Information Center quoted the report as saying.

"Some Iraqi scientists were forced to work in American research centers; however, the majority of them refused to cooperate in certain fields and fled the U.S. to other countries", it further stated.

The Pentagon agreed with the suggestion of Mossad, which believed that the best way to get rid of those scientists was to "physically eliminate them".

The American security service provided Israel with complete biographies on the Iraqi scientists and academics to facilitate killing them, the report said, adding that the Mossad campaign targeting Iraqi scientists is still underway.

AND NOT ONLY SCIENTISTS, BUT ALSO MANY HONEST JOURNALISTS ARE KILLED:

U.S. MILITARY (+MOSSAD) DELIBERATELY TARGETED JOURNALISTS IN IRAQ

Remember last year March?: ''Recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Eason Jordan, a CNN executive, told a panel that the U.S. military deliberately targeted journalists in Iraq. He said he "knew of about 12 journalistswho had not only been killed by American troops, but had been targeted as a matter of policy," said Rep. Barney Frank (Dem) from Massachusetts who was on the panel with Jordan." - Url:

FBI CONFIDENTIAL - the beat goes on.

U. S. Senate Judiciary Committee
Holds blockbuster oversight hearing with FBI Director Robert Mueller

May 2nd, 2006, Washington D.C. – Sen. Arlen Specter (R. – Pa.), as chair of the committee charged with oversight of the nation’s “principal investigative agency of the United States” made several statements today along with other senators from both Republican and Democratic parties that have been the subject to challenges by several commentators and news outlets. The senator also discussed later in the same hearing his concern of the FBI’s interpretation of the Valerie Plame controversy which lead to the contempt charge and jailing of New York Times reporter Judith Miller and the “arrest of reporters and their newspapers.”

Commentary is not unusual when it comes to this sort of hearing – it is one of the few regularly scheduled hearings available to the public – at – large where the elected legislators and the chief law enforcement officers meet to discuss “oversight” in open meeting.

Sen. Specter started the meeting with a reading of a list of questions of interest to the oversight committee and raised his questions relating to the use of classified information to “prosecute reporters.” Senator Edward Kennedy (D. – Mass.) described the history of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and asked how the FBI was reacting to the new conditions the government agency was operating in the 21st century. Specter said that the balance of respecting the civil liberties of citizens and waging the “war on terrorism” since 9/11 is being “seriously challenged.”

Specter brought up the new $305 million contract with Lockheed Martin for technological “acquisition” as reported in the March 2006 GAO report on information sharing between agencies, i.e. the development of new computerization programs “legislating a new level of bureaucracy” according to the senator.

Director Mueller (official transcript of his speech available here) discussed the creation of Field Intelligence Groups (FIGS) which increased “from 617 to 995” that transmitted over 20,000 analysis reports throughout the law enforcement networks.

Mueller did point out the wildly popular program of busting bigshots as, “[P]ublic corruption is the top criminal priority for the FBI. Over the last two years, our investigations have led to the conviction of over 1,000 government employees involved in corrupt activities, to include 177 federal officials, 158 state officials, 360 local officials, and more than 365 police officers.”

Mueller favorably described how the “PATRIOT Act [has] broken down the walls” between the different intelligence groups and had streamlined information sharing between them. Critics both inside and outside law enforcement have disagreed in the past.

Specter discussed on an “informal basis” the “prosecution of newspaper or newspaper reporters.” He cited statutes “18 USC 798 and 50 USC 421” and requested Mueller’s interpretation of the applicability of prosecuting those disseminating classified information under those laws. Mueller stated that he had learned of Specter’s request while “arriving” at the meeting and wasn’t prepared to interpret their applicability.
Specter said that a recent New York Times article appearing “the other day” has caused “concern.” Specter then brought up reports about recent FBI inquiries into columnist Jack Anderson’s files.

Senator Edward Kennedy brought up the “bad apple” in New York which was later referred to by name in news reports as Lindley DeVecchio a 33 year veteran including 11 years as a supervisor who was charged in March with four counts of second degree murder.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R – Iowa) in his opening statement laid into the director with:
“In March, a New York grand jury indicted retired FBI agent Lin DeVecchio on four counts of murder. DeVecchio allegedly accepted bribes from a mob boss and supplied him with inside information that led to the deaths of at least four people. This case sounds disturbingly familiar. The allegations are similar to those that surfaced a few years ago out of the Boston office, which led to two retired FBI agents being charged with crimes involving collusion with their high-level mafia informants. Current and former FBI officials have been publicly raising money for DeVecchio’s legal defense and more than forty agents appeared at his bond hearing to show support. According to the website maintained by DeVecchio’s supporters in the FBI, the agents helped post a one million dollar bond to secure his release, and after the hearing, the agents surrounded DeVecchio ‘in a human blanket’ as he left the courtroom so that he could not be questioned by reporters. One agent wrote, ‘it might even be said that a few reporters received a few body checks out on the sidewalk” and that he ‘was never prouder to be an FBI Agent.’” (Grassley’s complete official statement which details other perceived problems with the FBI is here.)

List of public “business” is extensive.
The hearing was conducted with Director Mueller under oath and covered a wide array of subjects; from the publicized allegations of unwarranted surveillance and surreptitious investigations of religious peace and anti – war organizations, newspaper reporters and publishers being investigated (and in Judith Miller’s example, jailed for 85 days) for their use of confidential sources; national security “watch” lists, new confidential informant guidelines, integration of the Sentinel computer system throughout the FBI (and according to a recent GAO finding of “unclear” funding sources to super defense contractor Lockheed Martin).

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D. – Vt.) questioned Director Mueller about the “billions of dollars spent to classify information” some that he noted was being re – classified after being previously cleared and posted on “government web sites.”

Both senators, Leahy and Specter, raised concerns about recent news stories concerning the late columnist Jack Anderson’s files. Anderson family members have been in contact with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R. – Ia.) and others complaining that FBI agents used questionable “investigative techniques.” Outrage apparently over FBI agents “interviews” using "trickery" to gain the signature of Anderson’s surviving 79 – year – old widow allowing them access and custody of the decedent’s reported 200 boxes of professional files.

Sen. Leahy brought up the criticisms of others that the reason the FBI was seeking Anderson’s files was to prevent disclosure of aspects of the late Director J. Edgar Hoover’s “personal life – style.”

Leahy then read from a disclosed “FBI report” concerning surveillance on a “catholic peace organization” in Pittsburgh, Pa. the Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Social Justice, the report was dated months “before the invasion of Iraq”.

He then said, “A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit recently filed by the ACLU has also revealed communications between the FBI and other law enforcement agencies about the surveillance of several other domestic peace groups. The FBI cannot simply dismiss these very serious concerns by citing Inspector General Fine’s recent report on the Bureau’s conduct during the 2004 nation political conventions. That report does not address these other incidents of domestic surveillance. According to the documents obtained in that lawsuit, these are not isolated events. The documents show that the FBI has infiltrated political, environmental, antiwar and faith-based groups elsewhere across the country.” [Leahy’s complete official statement is here.]

Mueller replied, “to my knowledge we have not surveilled the Quakers, to my knowledge I have not heard about that group you talked about, uh, the grannies.” The “Raging Grannies” was most recently represented by a group of 18 women recently acquitted in a New York City court for blocking a sidewalk in front of a military recruiter’s office. The Raging Grannies do have extensive networks, after all everybody has a grandmother, or aged matriarch. Popular sentiment being it would be hard to classify them as potential suicidal and/or homicidal terrorists. Mueller expressed disagreement with Sen. Leahy and added that he would, “have the IG investigate those assertions, rumors and allegations that may have been spread in the newspapers to assure that that is not the case. And I am concerned that raising to this level without a shred of evidence that there’s any support for those rumors that the public have the perception that the FBI is conducting this type of surveillance.”

And finally what critics of the FBI budget call a shell game hiding corporate lard.

Mueller explained to Leahy that in 2005 “because we did not have a contract” the FBI put aside funds ($97 million) as approved by legislative officials for a total $425 million budget in the Lockheed Martin agreement for Sentinel.

It's all about fighting over "lettuce and pickles."

Chomsky’s “Failed States” book:
Left – wing Typhoon is choking the Tycoons.
I noticed after watching Democracy Now’s EXCLUSIVE interview with Noam Chomsky about his latest book, title above, that the interviewers forgot to get to the part about the “democratic solutions” mentioned at the beginning of the program.

The old professor hailed as one of the smartest men in the world did bring up the revolutionary forces forming up in South America and I enjoyed his comments about occupying armies not having any “rights” but “responsibilities” toward “reparations” to the Iraqis people.

I am sure the tycoons and world leaders reading this book, though never acknowledging so in public, are worrying that the cat is out of the bag about the crisis afoot for the American empire.
