Military Officers Resisting Illegal War

From the important t r u t h o u t web site.

Statement in Support of First Lieutenant Ehren Watada
Statement from Debbie Clark
Thursday 29 June 2006

Delivered at a press conference at the King Center, Atlanta, Georgia, June 27, 2006.

It is my great honor and duty to be here today to share with others my support for the action of First Lieutenant Ehren Watada in disobeying an unlawful order to serve in a war that is both immoral and illegal, as well as to show my support for all military service members and their families who are now resisting this war.

Lt. Watada's refusal to obey orders to deploy to Iraq with his unit was not made lightly. It came about through much soul-searching and research that led him to the irreversible conclusion that to participate in this unlawful war of aggression would make him an accomplice to a criminal act.

Lt. Watada is the first commissioned officer to refuse orders to Iraq and is also the first soldier to do so who is not a conscientious objector. His decision is based on legal grounds as well as moral, with the recognition that a soldier has not only the duty to obey all lawful orders, but also the moral and legal obligation to disobey any unlawful order.

Lt. Watada's mother described her son as having "an unflinching commitment to his men and to democratic ideals" and said that he believes that he can best serve them by taking a stand against the war.

"In so doing," she said, "he demonstrates that one does not relinquish the freedom to choose what is right, even in the military, and that the freedom to choose what is right transcends the allegiance to man and institutions."

Lt. Watada is doing the right thing. As a US Army veteran myself of eight years' active duty, with five years in the military police and three years as a special agent in the US Army Criminal Investigation Command, and as a former soldier who remembers very well being explicitly trained by the Army that it is the duty of a soldier to disobey any unlawful order and to comply with the Geneva Convention, I honor Lt. Watada for the courage to be true to his conscience and true to his oath of office as a commissioned officer to support and defend the Constitution and bear true faith and allegiance to the same.

Refusing to participate in an unjust and illegal war is an act of conscience that is also an affirmation of the rule of law. No soldier owes absolute allegiance to any military system. The legal authority of military command is grounded in the rule of law, which is based on the Constitution and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The Constitution has requirements for what branch of government has the power to declare war and for what purpose - which is specified as being for the defense of the United States - and also makes any treaties adopted by the United States the law of the land.

There is a point at which one's conscience and understanding of the US Constitution, the United Nations Charter, the Nuremberg Principles, and the Geneva Conventions require an individual to make the conscious decision to obey or not to obey what he believes to be an unlawful order.

With great courage, Lt. Watada made that decision.

There is one veteran who was not able to be here today to show his support for Lt. Watada, but who would have liked to. He is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, now retired, US Air Force Major Kelley G. Culver, of Augusta, Georgia.

Major Culver has provided a statement in support of Lt. Watada, which I
will relay on his behalf:

In 1990, I was commander of an Air Force Combat Communication Squadron
deployed to the Persian Gulf for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. At
the time of the deployment, I was opposed to the war because it was obvious that
the true reason was not the liberation of Kuwait from Iraq, but the protection
of American oil interests in the Persian Gulf.

The true purpose of this war was obvious. The US had been a supporter of
Saddam Hussein's government in the years prior to the war, and had previously
turned a blind eye to Hussein's activities. Suddenly in 1990, the United States
was outraged at his actions. We went to war on a tapestry of lies.

The current war in Iraq was also started on a tapestry of lies. Neither the
situation in 1990 nor the situation today justifies the loss of American
military men and women.

In 1990, I opposed the war in the Persian Gulf, but I deployed and served
in spite of my objections. My reasons, simply put, were that I had a career at
stake. To refuse to deploy would have ended that career. I was not willing to
pay that price.

Today, we assemble in support of Lt. Ehren Watada, who, realizing the
illegal nature of the war in Iraq, has chosen to do what I could not do 16 years
ago. People will call him a coward for his actions, but I can assure you, this
is the action of a brave man.Today I add my support to the cause of Lt. Watada
and I thank him for taking the stand that I was unable to take myself.

- Kelley G. Culver, Major, USAF (Retired)

Military veterans can especially understand how hard a path it is that Lt. Watada has taken, because, whether we served in war or during peacetime, we know what it means to live and serve under military authority.

However hard it may be to stand up, any active duty service members today whose consciences have been moved by what they know in their hearts to be wrong can also take strength in knowing that the very same military authority that requires them to obey all lawful orders, also, if it is true to its own code, imposes upon them the obligation to disobey all unlawful orders.

Bush population control spin - jail doctors!

Bookmark this web log!
Another Woman hater is running the White House, smirking fearless leader is busy with war.

“On a PBS program aired this weekend and taped in April, new Bush domestic policy adviser Karl Zinsmeister told the host that he would personally support doctors being jailed for performing abortions, RAW STORY has discovered.
Zinsmeister, President George W. Bush's newly appointed chief Domestic Policy Advisor, gave the interview prior to his White House appointment. Zinsmeister was appointed May 24.”

"It" just keeps popping up!

Cheney’s energy “cabal” at Home on the Range

“NUKE’EM ALL!
WE’LL TAKE THEIR OIL!”

Whenever I finish delivering the Flyer, especially in the hot months, I like to stop at one of the village taverns for a cold beer. The route is 22 miles long and much of it is on gravel roads (the shortest distances covered to four of the small towns; Effingham, Valley Falls, Nortonville & Potter). I heard the above remark at the stopover from a very proud corn producer – who wadded my sheet up and threw it across the bar in a missed shot at the waste barrel. Another grand fellow commented that there was “millions and millions of barrels, up there in Alaska.” I have learned from experience that most who read the sheet and hate it never admit to it in public.

One local supporter and reader said, “Mike, it’s a sheet that is loved to be hated around here. It makes people think, which can be a dangerous thing for a guy like you in Kansas.”

Well as I have on many occasions reminded people after moving here more than eight years ago, that I am a native Kansan and am not going away. I refuse to apologize for helping them “deal with reality, before reality deals with them” to quote from Matt Savinar’s outstanding Peak Oil: Life After the Oil Crash. They are neighbors and I trust them to try to get along, or at least be polite about our differences.

It is a sheet that bodes ill for the typical energy hooked American rustic and since the big Bush “State of the Union” oil addiction speech there has been widespread denial, and I mean real denial (as in how addicts react to physical withdrawal symptoms) about their fearless leader giving them just a little bit of truth about just how bad is “bad” in the energy industry.

I am of the opinion that all the elites in the energy industry are going to make every buck they can, all the way down what Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R – Maryland) called the “peak curve” last March in a speech before the House of Representatives. It was a great speech and I encourage people to download and watch it from this web site. Store it on your hard drive and distribute it to your neighbors and local elected officials.

Every village government representative should have watched this speech and be preparing their citizens for this inevitable and looming energy crisis.

“While it's a very good find we should remember that 500 million barrels represents just six days of world consumption.” – from “Staring down the barrel of a crisis” the excellent Energy Bulletin Information Clearinghouse.

Below is an important section from the article “How to avoid oil wars, terrorism, and economic collapse” by Richard Heinberg

THE OIL DEPLETION PROTOCOL
WHEREAS the passage of history has recorded an increasing pace of change, such that the demand for energy has grown rapidly in parallel with the world population over the past two hundred years since the Industrial Revolution;

WHEREAS the energy supply required by the population has come mainly from coal and petroleum, having been formed but rarely in the geological past, such resources being inevitably subject to depletion;

WHEREAS oil provides ninety percent of transport fuel, essential to trade, and plays a critical role in agriculture, needed to feed the expanding population;

WHEREAS oil is unevenly distributed on the Planet for well-understood geological reasons, with much being concentrated in five countries, bordering the Persian Gulf;

WHEREAS all the major productive provinces of the World have been identified with the help of advanced technology and growing geological knowledge, it being now evident that discovery reached a peak in the 1960s, despite technological progress, and a diligent search;

WHEREAS the past peak of discovery inevitably leads to a corresponding peak in production during the first decade of the 21st Century, assuming no radical decline in demand;

WHEREAS the onset of the decline of this critical resource affects all aspects of modern life, such having grave political and geopolitical implications;

WHEREAS it is expedient to plan an orderly transition to the new World environment of reduced energy supply, making early provisions to avoid the waste of energy, stimulate the entry of substitute energies, and extend the life of the remaining oil;

WHEREAS it is desirable to meet the challenges so arising in a co-operative and equitable manner, such to address related climate change concerns, economic and financial stability and the threats of conflicts for access to critical resources.

NOW IT IS PROPOSED THAT

  1. A convention of nations shall be called to consider the issue with a view to agreeing an Accord with the following objectives:

  • to avoid profiteering from shortage, such that oil prices may remain in reasonable relationship with production cost;

  • to allow poor countries to afford their imports;

  • to avoid destabilising financial flows arising from excessive oil prices;

  • to encourage consumers to avoid waste;

  • to stimulate the development of alternative energies.

  1. Such an Accord shall have the following outline provisions:

  • No country shall produce oil at above its current Depletion Rate, such being defined as annual production as a percentage of the estimated amount left to produce;

  • Each importing country shall reduce its imports to match the current World Depletion Rate, deducting any indigenous production.

  1. Detailed provisions shall cover the definition of the several categories of oil, exemptions and qualifications, and the scientific procedures for the estimation of Depletion Rate.

  2. The signatory countries shall cooperate in providing information on their reserves, allowing full technical audit, such that the Depletion Rate may be accurately determined.

  3. The signatory countries shall have the right to appeal their assessed Depletion Rate in the event of changed circumstances.
(Note: the Oil Depletion Protocol has elsewhere been published as "The Rimini Protocol" and "The Uppsala Protocol." All of these documents are essentially identical.)

Foreign Press Foundation (The Netherlands) news release - "NEWS YOU WON'T FIND ON CNN"

Young People of America, Rise Up and Rebel!

'"MILITARY DRAFT FOR EACH AND EVERY MAN AND WOMAN AGED 18 TO 42"

BY DOUG SODERSTROM, PH.D.

06/13/06 'Information Clearing House' - Just over 50 years ago it was No Gun Ri. then My Lai. And now Haditha. and, as (headlines declare), even more mass murders, most recently in the Iraqi villages of Ishaqi, Hamdaniya, Latifiyah, and Yusifiyah; young men fresh out of high school, frustrated by life, with nothing better to do than to sign up as mercenaries ready and willing to kill for their country, yet, as always, afraid to die and angry as hell as a result of buddies (comrades-in-arms) having been killed, everyone of them having been thrown into a world of cultural confusion and death wanting nothing more than an opportunity to return home, body and mind unimpaired.

You see, for each of these young men and women, there will be two wars; the first a physical battle to stay alive, the second a psycho-spiritual effort, a struggle to live with what they 'had to do' in order to stay alive. In war there are no winners.. only those who lose least!

Isn¹t it ironic that just this week the commanders in charge of forces in Iraq, after having suffered the painful blowback, the natural consequences, of having so punctiliously trained our children to kill, having trained them to reflexively disregard the rather inconvenient intrusion of an always present voice reminding one of the value of human life, have found it necessary to reverse the harm they have done, that they tighten the slack in their leash on the troops, that it might be better if soldiers did begin to think, did in fact begin to use their minds, before choosing to take the life of another human being.

CORE WARRIOR VALUES

The new training program, technically referred to as "Core Warrior Values," an effort to enable soldiers to discriminate between who they should as opposed to who they should not be willing to kill; that is that it is proper for them to be chomping at the bits to kill the "bad guys," those armed with guns eager to kill them, but better for them to hold back a bit when it comes to the "good guys," women, children, the blind, and old men (especially those found to be sitting in wheel chairs). Something like training an American Pit Bull to viciously rip apart, that is, to devour, its prey, and then in midstream, amidst the chaos of an enraged battle, ensuring that the avenger will gently back off choosing to show mercy for those disinclined to fight back.

HE WAS SIMPLY FOLLOWING ORDERS

So many of our children, the vast majority of them Black, Hispanic, and poor, having been cajoled into joining the ranks of the military, all in order to support a country out to "right a world of wrongs." However, what these young folks are never told is that their primary job will be that of killing people, most often that of the enemy, but sometimes even those of their own buddies (during the first Gulf War nearly one out of four soldiers were shot and killed as a result of "friendly fire"). As part of their training (read: brainwashing) these young men and women will be taught: to stuff their conscience (to forget everything taught to them by their parents, elementary school teachers, preachers, priests, and/or rabbis); how to fire an automatic weapon with deadly accuracy; to loathe the adversary since such animosity will make it much easier to kill the enemy; and to trust the government, to have faith that once the soldier returns home all will be well, that all of his/her memories, the recollections of a buddy¹s head having been blown off, the old lady whose guts were splattered all over the wall, the insurgent who tried to smile as he lay dying on the street, and the little boy whose body he mistakenly blew apart while running to his mother arms, that the unending nightmares will simply vanish into thin air, for no reason other than the soldier¹s assurance that he did the right thing, that he was doing his duty, that he had done what he had been told to do, that he was simply following orders.

However, what the soldier is never told is that as a result of having gone to war there is a reasonable likelihood that he will struggle until the day he dies with nightmares depicting the horrors of war, the unrelenting grief, bitterness and resentment, despair, depression, and the anger that will have taken possession of his life; a marriage in which his wife will never understand what he has gone through; attempts to keep a job amidst the chaos of a life still at battle within; and, if all goes awry, that of exile, soldiers having been banished for having found themselves unable to adapt to "the niceties" of a more civilized world, those damned to a world of losers, a sort of depository, a melting pot of homelessness for those who have given up on life.

OUR CHILDREN NEED TO BE TOLD THE TRUTH.

Our sons and daughters need to realize that choosing to be a soldier means a decision to place themselves among "the damned," since no matter what they end up doing while on the field of battle, they will eventually be damned, damned if they do and damned if they do not. Realizing that compliance with a superior's order to shoot and kill the enemy may well lead to the damnation (the self-extirpation) of one's soul. On the other hand, noncompliance will lead to that of being court-martialed. However, regardless of the chaotic rigors of battle, regardless how terribly difficult it might be to figure out what one ought (or ought not) do, the lowest man on the totem pole, the grunt, rather than his superiors at the top, will be the one held responsible, the individual most likely to spend time in prison, and in some cases, the one most likely to be put to death for having killed an innocent victim.

Of course, along with the fact that most recruits will never receive any educational benefits, that their training in the military is for the most part irrelevant to jobs in the civilian sector, that their military recruiter was always a salesman and never a friend, that he was nothing more than "an advanced grunt" trying desperately, and far too often dishonestly, to meet a quota set for him by a military needing more bodies to be placed on the battlefield, the military recruit needs to understand that he is "an expendable," that his life has little or no value whatsoever for those at the top, that he is nothing more than mere cannon fodder, a redundant grunt filling a slot on the "front lines" of battle enriching the military-industrial complex, a conglomeration of the transnationally rich, felons whose prosperity depends upon the promise of more wars to come!

Just yesterday I discovered that a new bill, HR 4752, The Universal National Service Act of 2006 (a fancy name for a bill that would bring back "the draft"), has been introduced to The House of Representatives. Because the United States government (meaning the Bush-Cheney administration) is on the verge of militarily invading Iran, a conflict that might well lead to all out war in the Middle East, the United States Congress is not taking any chances. Such a bill "on the table," and ready to be passed (enacted) when necessary, will authorize the United States government to once again initiate a military draft for each and every man and woman aged 18 to 42. Although most of the people I have discussed this matter with have told me that there is no way our government would reinstitute the draft since such would no doubt represent political suicide. And they are right.

However, there is one thing that trumps the need to avoid political self-immolation, and that is the need to have an adequate supply of soldiers on the ground to fight the next war, the "Battle of Iran," a conflagration likely to draw in the remainder of countries in the Middle East, partisans who may well begin to realize that we, as a nation, had no business meddling in the affairs of the Middle East, no right to have sent our soldiers a world away in order to occupy that of another country.

THE WAR IN IRAQ IS NO DOUBT ILLEGAL

Consequently, since the war in Iraq is no doubt illegal, it is destroying the social fabric of our people, the economic infrastructure of our nation, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the spreading of peace and democracy around the world, the fact that the president lied in regards to why we went to war, the conflict in Iraq has created a world of greater danger, our warring posture has given the world even more reasons to hate us, I am proposing that it is time for young folks to pull their heads out of the sand, that they come in from the dark, that they begin to pay attention, that they realize that their brothers and sisters have been used (more likely even, abused) by the government, that, before it is too late, they need to tell the military establishment that they will not go to war!

OUR YOUTH NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE TREMENDOUS POWER THEY HAVE, THAT WAR IS SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE IF THEY REFUSE TO FIGHT, IF THEY MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THEY WILL NOT TAKE UP ARMS.

Because our country has become the world's leading producer as well as supplier of military weapons and technology, the world's primary advocate of war, a warmongering nation that requires the destruction of all who threaten its right to dominate the world, our children need not presume that they have a moral responsibility to support the military establishment. I realize that our time has not yet come, that the tipping point, that of the military draft, has yet to become a reality. But when forced conscription into the military becomes inevasible, I expect young people, at least those able to comprehend the significance of their place in history, to take a stand against the tyranny of war forces of evil cryptically embedded within the polity of a nation having gone wrong. I am calling upon the youth of this country to say no to war, to tell their leaders that they will not obey the government¹s request that they take up arms, that they will not go to war for the purpose of killing the enemy.

BEING A TRULY DECENT PERSON

So many of our young folks have been brought up to believe that being a good person has something to do with that of having a good reputation, being liked by everyone, being held in high esteem by others, even that of being a patriotic citizen, but such has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with that of being a truly decent person. I beg the young people of this nation to consider the ominous proposition that, as it was in the days of Nuremberg when the Nazis were held responsible for crimes against humanity, when the leaders of the German nation dressed their children ³in brown shirts² reminding that they had a moral obligation (a national duty) to fight for the Fatherland, it will be the same for the leaders of our nation, as well as for those who blindly allow themselves to be coerced into fighting for our country, a nation having come under the nefarious control of malefactors convinced that our nation has been given the right, the God-ordained responsibility, to oversee the planet, to, in fact, rule the world.

So someday when you reach the end of your days, when you become rather old, and are no doubt ready to die, realize that no one (at least no one of any significance) will ever choose to ask if you were a good citizen, if you were a patriot, if you were loyal to your country. You will never be asked if you wore a uniform with distinction.

The only thing for which you will be held accountable, by "those who count,²"is that of having chosen to become a decent human being, that of having chosen to live your life according to the laws of humanity (the principles of justice, peace, and love), the Law of God, which demands but one, and only one, thing ... that we love one another.

Pinter's Lecture "Art, Politics & Truth"

Headline streamed
Worth the Listen, in case you missed it.
Harold Pinter’s Nobel Lecture “Art, Politics & Truth” was pre-recorded, and shown on video December 7, 2005, in Börssalen at the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.

He won the literature prize and delivered this lecture to those attending. The lecture was not broadcasted in America.

It remains one of the most devastating and eloquent critiques of U. S. and British foreign policies ever delivered. I found the link from the Nobel web site . It is 46 minutes in Real Video in "hi" or "lo" bandwidth.

How much of a "debate" will it be?

Thursday, 10 hour “debate” on Iraq in the House of Representatives
We are sure to hear another round of stupidity from our delegates in Washington DC and never hear about solving oil addiction, permanent military bases in foreign lands and world conquest.
The empire's citizenry is safely blindfolded, dumbed down and oblivious. Our elected representatives have their work cut out for them - that is, they will have to work. It will be interesting to view the spectacle.

Dr. Fred Whitehead has released his latest Freethinkers' Solidarity Bulletin

FREETHOUGHT SOLIDARITY BULLETIN #4

May 23, 2006

This bulletin, edited and produced by Fred Whitehead, Kansas City, Kansas for the International Committee to Protect Freethinkers (ICPF) is FREE.  If you do not wish to receive this, see instructions at the end of this message.

Items:

#1: Attack on Turkish judges

#2: Nazanin case in Iran

#3: Writer imprisoned in Iran

#4: Book Review

#5: Resources

#1: ATTACK ON TURKISH JUDGES

On May 17, an armed attorney opened fire in the country’s highest court, killing one judge, Mustafa Yucel Ozbilgin, and seriously wounding four others while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is most great) and “I am a soldier of Allah.”  The perpetrator declared to police that he carried out the attack because the court had ruled that a woman who wore a headscarf could not be promoted to headteacher in an elementary school.

Since the foundation of modern Turkey, the headscarf issue has been a constant source of friction, as Kemal Ataturk, the country’s acknowledged leader in the 1920s, had prohibited it as a symbol of the subjugation of women.  The present government, under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is in large part Islamist, and appears to aim at weakening secularism.

After the attack, tens of thousands of ordinary citizens and political leaders marched to Ataturk’s tomb, in defense of secularism.  Turkey’s President, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, declared that “pressure and threats will not intimidate the Turkish judiciary, which will continue its constitutional duties bound to the secular and democratic republic.”

The same assailant participated in an attack on the secularist newspaper Cumhuriyet.

Messages of protest and solidarity may be directed to Prime Minister Erdogan at bilgi@basbakanlik.gov.tr, and to President Sezer at cumhurbaskanligi@tccb.gov.tr.

#2: NAZANIN CASE IN IRAN

On January 3, 2006, Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi, a young woman, was sentenced to death by a criminal court for murder in a case where she stabbed an assailant who with two others, had attempted to rape her and her niece.  At trial she stated the act was a matter of self-defense, but unless the Supreme Court of Iran reverses the decision, she will soon be executed by hanging.

While we have no information that Nazanin is a freethinker, we still encourage readers to protest such an unjust sentence.  Messages should be directed to His Excellency Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader, Government of Iran, Soahada Street, Qom, Islamic Republic of Iran, e-mail info@leader.ir.

#3: WRITER IMPRISONED IN IRAN

In late April, 2006, security officers arrested scholar Ramin Jahanbegloo, and transported him to the notorious Evin prison.  The minister of information told the press that he had ordered the arrest because of “his contacts with foreigners.”  Jahanbegloo earned a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne in Paris, and is the author of 20 books in English, French and Persian on topics of philosophy and culture.  Before his arrest, he was director of contemporary studies at Iran’s Cultural Research Bureau and an advocate of nonviolence and intercultural dialogue.”  The April 27 issue of Le Monde newspaper printed remarks by this Jahanbegloo critical of current policies of the Iranian government, and this was the likely cause of the arrest.

Letters or messages of concern and protest should be directed to Supreme Leader Khamenei, details in #2 above.

#4: BOOK REVIEW

Robert Spencer.  The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).  Regnery Publishing, Inc., One Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, DC 20001.  2005.  270pp.  Paperback.  $19.95.

Future historians of this book should consider that soon after its publication in the autumn of 2005, it quickly rose to a place on the New York Times bestseller list, before a single review ever appeared.  Indeed, as of this date (late November, 2005), the only reviews that have appeared are in a few conservative on-line sources such as Front Page.  How could it so quickly have been a success?

            One factor was the author’s position as director of Jihad Watch, a valuable website (jihadwatch.org) which daily publishes short notices on current developments in the rise of militant Islamic fundamentalism.  Another was that Spencer had the good fortune of being invited to various radio programs around the country.  Not least is the simple fact that such a book was needed; that is, it is timely, and pulls no punches in its exposĂ© of this variety of fundamentalism.  For not only were there the infamous attacks of September 11, 2001, but a multitude of terrorist events which followed: bombings, mutilations, and the like, continuing in many countries.

            As the title suggests, the book is divided into two complementary sections, the first on Islam as such, and the second on the Crusades.  Unlike many “liberal” commentators, Spencer argues that we cannot really understand the Crusades, or indeed, contemporary history, without understanding the origins and character of Islam itself.  And also unlike most liberals, Spencer insists that from its beginning, Islam was militant, expansionist, and predatory.

            The first chapter takes up the life of Muhammed, “Prophet of War.”  Here we read a dreary chronicle of assassination, deceit, and revenge.  The emphasis is on the role of Muhammed “the raider.”  When his own Quraysh tribe of Mecca rejected his prophecies, his “frustration and rage became evident.  When even his uncle, Abu Lahab, rejected his message, Muhammed cursed him and his wife in violent language that has been preserved in the Qur’an.”  The text (Qur’an 111:1-5) runs thus: “May the hands of Abu Lahab perish!  May he himself perish!  Nothing shall his wealth and gains avail him.  He shall be burnt in a flaming fire, and his wife, laden with faggots, shall have a rope of fiber around her neck!”  Subsequently, other tribal warriors in Medina accepted him as a prophet, and launched a series of raids which “kept the nascent Muslim movement solvent and helped form Islamic theology.”  Indeed, one could cogently argue, as Spencer does throughout this book, that from its origins, Islam arose as a series of daring raids by desert nomadic peoples against such cities as they encountered.

            Time and time again, hundreds, then thousands of such warriors would appear as if out of nowhere, proclaiming to the astonished inhabitants of an encircled city that they would be spared if they immediately submitted to Allah and his Prophet.  Heavily outnumbered, they usually submitted; those who did not were duly put to the sword.  Women and children were sometimes killed as well, but on other occasions were “merely” enslaved.

            As Islam proceeded with such conquests, extending within a century across many thousands of miles of territory, the victors realized that they needed some local survivors to provide even a minimal form of government.  This gave rise to the concept of the dhimmi—the people of “the book,” Jews and Christians who were given a subordinate status on the condition that they pay a heavy tax called the jizya.  Such “latitude” has given rise to what Spencer calls the PC myth of tolerance.  Forcing Jews to wear a distinguishing Star of David was one of the milder forms of submission.  One historian cited by Spencer states that “restrictions of all kinds, unlawful taxation, forced labor, persecutions, violence, imprisonment, death, abductions of girls and boys and their confinement to Turkish harems, and various deeds of wantonness and lust” were the fate of the dhimmi in 19th century Greece under the Ottomans.  Such harsh measures, such as assassinations, torture, mutilation and destruction of churches continue today, all carefully documented with extensive footnotes.

            Muslims often argue that their religion respects women, whereas “western” societies degrade them.  Spencer cites numerous passages from the Qur’an stipulating that women are forever to be subordinate to men, including physical punishment for the unruly.  Thus verse 4:34: “Good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded.  As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them.”  Given such postulates, horrendous practices such as female circumcision are a logical conclusion, justified by leaders like the grand sheikh of al-Azhar in Egypt, “the highest spiritual authority for nearly a billion Sunni Muslims.”

            Spencer establishes that these ideas and practices are not an aberration within Islam, but are intrinsic to it.  Of course, not every Muslim follows these precepts, and there has been resistance throughout history to them, including from women themselves, then as now brutally suppressed.

            Well, some have argued, even so, Islamic societies have produced science, culture and art comparable to those of any advanced civilization.  Spencer’s answer to this is that “there was a time when Islamic culture was more advanced than that of Europeans, but that superiority corresponds exactly to the period when Muslims were able to draw on and advance the achievements of Byzantine and other civilizations.”  Jews and Christians within Islamic societies were often the source of achievements in science, philosophy and medicine inaccurately attributed to Muslims.  Of course, Muslim scholars began to participate in fields such as mathematics and optics, but the record was mixed insofar as the reinforcement of religious orthodoxy by figures like al-Ghazali (1058-1128) prevailed.  In his influential work The Incoherence of the Philosophers, al-Ghazali attacked the “denial of revealed laws and religious confessions” and “rejection of the details of religious and sectarian [teaching], believing them to be man-made laws and embellished tricks.”  The result was a many-centuries-long stagnation of Islamic societies.  In other words, Spencer charges Islam not only with psychological brutalization, but with philosophical and cultural repression, all of which continue abated to the present day.

            The second section of the book takes up the Crusades, and here Spencer’s discussion runs into real problems.  He cogently argues that in some degree, the Crusades, which began out of contests and disputes with Byzantium over territorial control in the 10th century, were an attempt by Christians to “take back” what the Muslims had seized.  Spencer is too honest to just ignore the various horrors carried out by the Crusaders, such as the pogroms against Jews in Germany, but he argues that these were more or less incidental to the broader enterprise.  If, however, he has successfully argued that predatory war was “essential” to Islam, how can he argue the same for the abuses by the Crusaders, which included the slaughter of everyone in Jerusalem in 1099.

            “The Crusaders’ sack of Jerusalem was a heinous crime,” Spencer admits, “particularly in light of the religious and moral principles they professed to uphold.  However, by the military standards of the day, it was not out of the ordinary.”  What is “ordinary” then?  The “rivers of blood” in contemporary accounts, says Spencer, are but “a rhetorical flourish.”  Rather lamely, he suggests “there weren’t enough people in Jerusalem to bleed that much.”  Citation of other contemporary slaughters of Christians by Muslims doesn’t exactly help his case. The fact is, much of history is filled with horrors perpetrated in the name of religion—whether Muslim, Christian, or Jewish (read the Old Testament for details of the latter).

            The motto at the beginning of Spencer’s book is Deus Vult!—“God wills it!—the famous (or infamous) battle cry of the Crusaders.  Searching the Internet for information as to Spencer’s own personal religious affiliation, I learned that he is a Melkite Christian (Catholic Report, September 22, 2005, at catholicreport.org).  Thus he has, if we may use the _expression, a personal ax to grind here.  Any author is of course entitled to have such a perspective, but readers should be clear that Spencer’s view is that of a conservative Christian.  It is thus that his book drew advanced publicity praise from conservative and neo-conservative writers such as Michelle Malkin, Bat Ye’or and Serge Trifkovic.

            This does not at all mean that Spencer’s book can be ignored.  Indeed, writers from this perspective have arguably been more perceptive about Islam’s political trajectory than more blinkered liberals.  The great value of Spencer’s book is its marshalling of a great deal of information of which the general public and even scholars are ignorant.

            His publisher, Regnery, is a venerable conservative house, notable for a long list of stolid and rather boring titles.  With this series of “Politically Incorrect Guides,” some of which have been rather harshly reviewed previously, they embark on a new course.  This book’s virtues, aside from its main arguments, are attractive sidebars (including some splendid quotations from such as John Quincy Adams and Winston Churchill), careful documentation, and clear, accessible design.  While Spencer’s book ignores or minimizes the depredations of Christianity (consider the position of women in that religion!), it is still a relevant and valuable contribution to the field of Islamic studies.

#5: RESOURCES

Robert Spencer’s website, jihadwatch.org, not only follows current developments concerning militant Islam, but has a subsidiary site for which a link is supplied, called dhimmiwatch, which follows controversies concerning accommodations to Islam in the West.  There are links to numerous other websites, of varying quality, with conservative ones predominant.  I have been a regular reader of postings on jihadwatch, and have noted that while the main viewpoints are conservative, Christian and “western-centric,” the focus is on evidence rather than simple name-calling or bigotry.

A website that publishes a regular online “magazine” every two months is www.middleastwomen.org under the direction of Azam Kamguian in London.  Also based in London is Houzan Mahmoud, one of the leading figures of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI).  Her blog is another good way to keep up with regional developments, at http://houzanmahmoud.blogspot.com.

The International Freedom of _Expression Exchange (IFEX) operates out of Toronto, and since 1992 has defended “those who have the courage to insist upon their fundamental human right to free _expression” when they are “censored, brutalized or killed.”  The IFEX has campaigns, spotlight reports and an enormously helpful set of links to related sites.  On the links I found the Beacon for Freedom of _Expression, supported by the government of Norway, with an informative short account of the great ancient libraries and research centers of Alexandria, as well as special reports on the history of censorship in Norway itself, and a list of the books included on the Index of Prohibited Books of the Catholic Church, which was promulgated on its claim of authority for 400 years.  For IFEX, go to ifex.org, and for the Beacon, go to beaconforfreedom.org.

We have now received “An Introduction to Reality”—a CD-ROM produced by the remarkable and diligent Emmett Fields of Louisville, Kentucky.  Among many other Freethought works on this disk are Joseph McCabe’s 40 volume set “Key to Culture,” originally published by E. Haldeman-Julius in Girard, Kansas.  McCabe presents the basic facts of physics, astronomy, geology, biochemistry, paleontology, botany, zoology, comparative anatomy, anthropology, philology, embryology, psychology, history, literature, political science, economics, art, and philosophy, which in times past would have consisted of a good high school education in America, but now would approximate the first two years of college if not more.  I read through a large part of the volume on Logic, and found it a masterful exposition.  McCabe moved from being a Catholic to a status as “the world’s greatest scholar” and a dedicated Freethinker.  The same disk includes McCabe’s “Why I Left the Church,” and his 100-page book “The History and Meaning of the Catholic Index of Forbidden Books,” and more books by other authors—all this for $25 plus postage!  Fields has also reissued Watson Heston’s hilarious collection of cartoons from 1892, “The Bible Comically Illustrated” in CD-ROM format.  For details, go to bank-of-wisdom.com or write PO Box 926, Louisville, KY 40201.

CIA TERROR FLIGHTS: US COLLABORATORS IN 14 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES LIED

Bush said: 'We do not torture', but today an EU investigation is accusing 14 European countries of crimes against humanity. Proving they criminally collaborate with the US Gulag program of secret jails and torture. They have known about the CIA torture flights before: it became 'official' on January 22, 2003.

by Henk Ruyssenaars

FPF - Amsterdam - June 7th 2006 -
Asked in British Parliament last December concerning Amnesty International's reports of at least 400 CIA torture flights flights passing through British airports, UK Prime minister Tony Blair said: "In respect of airports, I don't know what you are referring to." Dutch PM Balkenende when asked in parliament like all other EU stooges lied - and keeps lying - the same way.

The same PM however takes part in a so called 'government' hypocritically calling itself 'christian', but which permanently has been lying about it's complicity in the US terror flights and global genocide. There are tons of evidence concerning the EU top's punishable complicity in all the war crimes, and more is presented today.

An EU investigation is expected to accuse 14 countries in Europe, including Britain, of being involved in the CIA program of rendition, terror and secret detention of terrorist suspects. According to 'The Telegraph' (UK): ''Swiss senator Dick Marty will describe what he calls a "spider's web" of rendition flights which has enveloped Europe, according to reports.''

Even if this news is played down - underreported - as much as is possible, it is a fact that all US collaborators in 14 European countries lied. They without shame nor compassion keep lying to the people who pay them, the taxpayers which employ them. Those 'dirty and musty gamers' all have known - at least since the European Union's Athens meeting on January 22, 2003.

But cowardly - and contrary to their duty as our, and by us paid representatives - they all kept silent concerning the atrocities after talks with the US delegation headed by a justice department official. Our personal which clearly neglected it's duty and human rights, should be fired and be tried in court for their war crimes.

THE CRIMINALS ARE SILENT ABOUT THEIR ONGOING GENOCIDES IN THE ILLEGAL WARS

According to The Telegraph: ''EU officials confirmed that a full account was circulated to all member governments, and would have been sent to the Home Office.'' They were all informed and they all lied. The document, entitled: 'New Transatlantic Agenda, EU-US meeting on Justice and Home Affairs' - details the subjects discussed by the 31 people present. The agenda included the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and extradition agreements. They all knew and shut up about those crimes against humanity.

The Amnesty International reports on the inhuman US warfare and the spreading american Gulag* was suppressed as much as was possible too. The usual pundits -  the prompter propagandists - were misinforming about the 'liberation of Iraq and Afghanistan', where everybody was oh so happy! with the occupiers, excuse me: liberators.

But last night even one of the worst propaganda sewers right now, the BBC, in it's Newsnight program couldn't get around it, and had to confirm that the UK was implicated as a collaborating "stop-off point" for torture flights.

EU investigator Marty said something which surprised nobody: ''My efforts were hindered by a lack of co-operation by EU governments''. Mr. Marty's investigation by the way ran parallel to a probe by the European Parliament, which had the data from Eurocontrol at it's disposal, the EU's air traffic agency, showing there have been more than 1000 clandestine CIA terror flights stopping on European territory since the 'false flag' September 11 attacks in the US, the by the PNAC pack orchestrated 'New Pearl Harbor'.*

Last April, a report published by the human rights group Amnesty International also found more than 1000 flights linked to the CIA and the US's "murky system of captures, transfers and secret detention" of terror suspects. Global locations include Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, [Poland, Rumania] and Guantanamo Bay - [endquotes]

REVELATION CONTRADICTS REPEATED EU DENIALS

In December last year one could read in the Telegraph: ''The European Union secretly allowed the United States to use transit facilities on European soil to transport 'criminals' in 2003, according to a previously unpublished document.

The revelation contradicts repeated EU denials that it knew of "rendition" flights by the CIA. The EU agreed to give America access to facilities - presumably airports - in confidential talks in Athens during which the war on terror was discussed, the original minutes show.

BUT ALL REFERENCES TO THE AGREEMENT WERE DELETED FROM THE RECORD BEFORE IT WAS PUBLISHED.

The minutes of the Athens meeting on January 22, 2003, were written by the then Greek presidency of the EU after the talks with a US delegation headed by a justice department official. EU officials confirmed that a full account was circulated to all member governments, and would have been sent to the Home Office.

The document, entitled New Transatlantic Agenda, EU-US meeting on Justice and Home Affairs, details the subjects discussed by the 31 people present. The agenda included the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and extradition agreements.

In the full version it says: "Both sides agreed on areas where co-operation could be improved [inter alia] the exchange of data between border management services, increased use of European transit facilities to support the return of criminal/ inadmissible aliens, co-ordination with regard to false documents training and improving the co-operation in removals."

But this section, and others referring to US policy, were deleted - as a "courtesy" to Washington, according to a spokesman for the EU Council of Ministers.

THE EU COUNCIL - OUR PERSONAL - IS HOLDING THE ROPES FOR THE HENCHMEN

Washington has been angered by the growing EU people's protests about the movement and alleged abuse of terror suspects. John 'Bellicose' Bellinger, senior legal adviser, spin spouter and liar to the US State Department, said on BBC radio:

"Some of the allegations more broadly about all sorts of things are ludicrous. These allegations that we have these activities going on in the hundreds over Europe, and that we are going to take people off to be mistreated, are simply untrue."

You're not supposed to know that!

Big Oil and Cheney’s trips coincide with “new Cold War”

Here is a peek into “a regime that has something to hide” as Bush described Saddam’s Iraq to the American people in justifying the invasion, but what I am relating to you is what Bush and Cheney’s Big Energy buddies are doing behind the scenes to the American people.

Truthout’s web site editor called it one of the most important articles to be read “this month.” That is some great kind of heavy duty endorsement.

It is located at: Cheney Starts New Cold War Over Oil and the study of the behind the scene agreements extend all over Central Asia and into Russia’s backyard and encompass U. S. military bases, the seeming unstoppable “military industrial complex” extending its reach across the world.

A faith - based greenback - slipping away?

You can count on one thing – the coming crisis is not being manufactured under the watchful eyes of the Pentagon planners.

It is slowly and quietly, for right now, slipping into a cyclical economic crisis and the question is will it fall by a “controlled demolition” or tailspin into a free fall.

Mike Whitney writes:

Even if the administration’s plans in the Middle East succeed, there are
stormy times ahead for the greenback. The United States has reached an
unsustainable level of debt in government, business and personal finances.
Personal savings are down, mortgage payments are up, and credit card debt is
higher than ever. The entire country is mired in swamp of red ink for which
there is no easy remedy.

James Shepherd, President of JAS
MTS Inc. puts it this way:
A perfect storm is
developing and much of this danger has to do with debt. …
When a
saturation point of debt and leverage is reached, even a minor dislocation can
cause a dramatic collapse….Debtors are always punished more severely in a
declining economy because, as activity subsides, they are less able to service
their debt and the value of the assets that have collateralized are also
falling. Once those that own real estate realize that their neighbors cannot
service their mortgages and are forced to sell at almost any price, thereby
driving down the perceived value of their own property, the conditions necessary
for a full-fledged debt-driven meltdown will be in place…
a severe
recession - is about to sweep over the landscape and blow away those who are not
prepared
.”

The predictions of Warren Buffett,
Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, are equally sobering:

“There are deep-rooted structural problems that
will cause America to continue to run a huge current-account deficit unless
trade policies either change materially or the dollar declines by a degree that
could prove unsettling to financial markets. Indeed, without policy changes,
currency markets could become disorderly and generate spill-over
effects, both political and financial
.” (Quotes form Dudley Baker,
“Ominous Warnings and Dire Predictions of World’s Financial
Experts”)

“Could the falling dollar lead to “political turmoil”, as
Buffett suggests?

The Organization for Economic
Cooperation (O.E.C.D.) has joined skeptics at the IMF in predicting that the
dollar will fall by 35% to 50% in order to balance current account deficits.
These are modest predictions given the enormous amount of debt the US has
accumulated in just the last 6 years. ($3 trillion) Consider how life for the
average American will change when gas is $6 per gallon rather than $3; when
groceries skyrocket to twice their normal price, and when life-savings are cut
in half overnight.
